AVCHD and Avid

Oh oh ok! That makes perfect sense! Most clips I'd be importing are much smaller in length on that! Thanks for the information!

I have imported the AVCHD with success into Media Composer. I prefer something like Cineform or ProRes, because it handles other post work like color correction fairly well.

But blackcat, importing Cineform or ProRes into Avid will just transcode it to DnxHD too, unless you're using AMA - in which case isn't your performance taking a hit?

I am just switching my workflow over to Avid. I had run tests with AMA, and I thought I would import Cineform files that way. My reason for Cineform over DnxHD is compatibility with DaVinci Resolve. Do you have a better suggestion?

I was not arguing for Cineform over DnxHD, only that my workflow is not just in Avid.

A couple of things to point out, which may be obvious, but anyway:

ClipWrap transcodes AVCHD (and HDV) to either DVCPROHD, DNxHD, or ProRes, in addition to doing simple .mov rewraps.

Clipwrap re-wraps, not transcodes, so it's supposed to be (I haven't used it) very fast.

Also, if you're re-wrapping (or transcoding) to DVCPRO HD, you're converting from 1920x1080 to 1440x1080, which may, or may not, matter to you.

DNxHD may be the preferred route?

As long as it works for you, great. I've tried AMA-ing Cineform files once or twice, but it seemed slow and a bit glitchy to me.

That makes sense. Cineform is working fine so far. Thanks for the heads up with your experience. I am still designing my workflow, and it is good to get feedback. Does that mean you are doing Cineform on longer clips, and then importing the Cineform clip into Avid, to be converted to DnxHD?

It does both - either rewraps or transcodes. I've come to prefer it over FCP L&T since it isn't so darned picky about folder structure, does just as good a job of transcoding, and has a superior moustachioed intro screen.
