Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Yes, worldwide. I'm told 75% of the people who have seen it in foreign countries had to see the 2D version (not many 3D projectors in these countries) so I wonder what the big draw for them is?

Probably the hype and the fact that it is from the director of Titanic. It certainly isn't because of the star power of the film's actors. And its an entertaining movie. One that people have seen in other guises a few times, however.

So call me a doofus, but shouldn't all HDTV's be able to do 3D as long as you have a stereoscopic signal being put out from a 3D DVD or Blu-ray disc, and of course the proper 3D glasses on your head?

On another note, Avatar is now the #2 highest grossing film of all time. That's freaking nuts that it got there so fast. Anybody think Cameron will beat his Titanic record, which was 1.8 billion? I think he just might do it.

Man, I clicked around that site. Those guys are A**HOLES!

Love that site. Almost as good as Maddox.

If you’re keeping score at home, James Cameron, who once said that Titanic was about F-you money, now has F you money, S my D money, lick my Bs money, come on your Ts money, take a steaming S in your C money, and money that he lights on fire to keep his other money warm money

Come on, that's some good Internet blather.

Late to the party....

This movie was pretty damn good. The CGI was great but it didn't leave me like some movies did the first time I saw them.
Effects wise that is. Impressed... yes. Blown away, no.

When the Na'vi and humans were on screen together they (Na'vi) looked worse and less 'real'. Cameron was smart not to do this too often.
In their own world I found the Na'vi completely believable. Breathtaking world at that.

The story is nothing original. Hell, I'm surprised FernGully hasn't been mentioned here? Maybe it has been and I missed it.
There are SOOOO many similarities it's not even funny. Right down to the tree near the end.

All that aside, Cameron took a common story and made it something pretty special.
Even though I knew what was going to happen long before it did I was still swept up by the film and enjoyed it immensely.

Great stuff.

EDIT: I just wanted to comment on the 3D aspect. It was done well because it wasn't 'in your face', it was subtle.
Aside from that I didn't see anything amazing in the 3D realm that I haven't seen in a few other films of late. Still not sure what all the 3D hype is all about.
Maybe that's just me.

Yes, they're honest, but if your agenda is to just be a dick and pee all over everything and anyone without consideration I can't really respect that. I only pee on those who deserve it.

Samsung 67" LED DLP. I got mine at Best Buy for $1200 (floor model). You have to get the glasses separately, I haven't even bothered to look into what those would cost.

The Samsung SSG1000X glasses list for about $120 per copy...

...but they are no longer manufactured, and just about every place that carried them is out of stock.

Brilliant.

now who deserves to be peed is a bit of a subjective decision, isn't it?

Yeah, but according to them, it's EVERYONE...I can't take criticism seriously when its only goal is to desecrate, defame and deride everything on sight. Maybe I'm exaggerating. Their hipper than thou attitude just rubbed me the wrong way.

I agree with this quote:

I've thought about this a lot, and I think this is all by design. A lot of my complaints about the film kind of evaporate if I stop thinking of it as a film and think of it more as a video game. The cinematography makes more sense. The shot choices make more sense. The complete lack of any real dirt, grit, or anything remotely tactile makes sense, because that's what a video game is. Even the conceit of the film is a video game. You get to go out in this avatar body and do all this stuff with no stakes, because if your avatar dies, well just grow a new one.

It's an interesting tactic, considering the fact that more and more people choose video games their entertainment. It's this that leads me to think more and more films will go that direction. Which I suppose is a natural evolution of the medium.

But I just re-watched "The Princess Bride" and "The French Connection" and with Hollywoods eternal cycle of remakes, I cringe at the thought of films like these being turned into video games.

I don't think Avatar really changes anything. What it does do is take a very old concept and do it extremely well.

I was admittedly chocked up during a scene or two towards the end. Of course, 'UP' managed to do the same thing to me within the first act.
It took much longer for Avatar to invoke that response from me.

SPOILERS!!

When all the living creatures began fighting back.... that was a very moving moment for me, even though I knew it was coming. That says something.

At least for this viewer.
