Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Weekend estimates are about 73 million, which is very good opening for a film released in December but not an insane smash hit out of the gate. I expect this one to have a a lot of legs because exit polls have been excellent and there will probably be a lot of repeat business. Then there's worldwide. 2012 has only made 155 million domestically but 555 million worldwide, which I can't even believe. That's more than three times the domestic take! Avatar is a better film than 2012 so I think it will be more than fine.

Yeah, I think it's funny how little domestic box offices really matter anymore, especially with the dollar being as weak as it is.

Heck, besides meat and crop, movies are probably America's only other sound export. We've already got the talent and the technology.

And Bollywood sucks a$$, so there's that too.

Careful. Don't get too political.

He also has to do Avatar's sequels.

God no. It felt complete when I left the theater. Sure I wanted to spend more time there, but not with a sequel. I felt the same way after seeing the Matrix and it was that it was complete: no need for a sequel. Look how THAT mess turned out...

Well it's true. And I felt the same way. I wanted to spend my entire day there, but on the same movie.

But hey, this is James Cameron. If anyone can pull off good sequels it's him.

Cameron said this in regards to a sequel--

Cameron said, "We joked about this all the time. We cut to 10 years later, Jake's [Sam Worthington] kind of fat and sitting in Home Tree and says, 'Honey get me a beer,' and Neytiri's [Zoe Saldana] like, 'Get your own beer.' You know, that's kind of the reality of a love story 10 years later [laughs]."

Found this little fellow while out on errands, today. Parks nicely on my desk.

At first I thought this too, but then after seeing it a few more times, I began to feel that there will be plenty of room for sequels if Cameron chooses to go there.

The challenge is, how do they bring the humans back? It would have to be 10 years later since it would be about 5 years back to Earth for the exiled humans, and then another 5 years to get back to Pandora with a new batch of soldiers and scientists. Unless of course there was already another starship en route to Pandora after the one Jake was on left Earth. And I would think that there could be some more Na'vi tribes that could be very different from the ones we've seen so far. And I'm sure a world like Pandora would have some more exotic creatures than were shown in the film.

I have to admit though, that after my first screening of Avatar, I was thinking how awesome a proper Aliens sequel Cameron could make using the 3D tech and the amazing digital effects tech that was developed for Avatar. Action and horror would be a really fun way to further use the 3D technology. Just think how nerve wracking it could be to go inside an alien hive with some marines in 3D.

Alita... I can't wait. That's what got me into Avatar technology, hearing he was going to be doing that.

Same here. Alita feels like it could be a wild action packed version of one of my favorite low budget sci-fi films, Hardware. For some reason I feel like they could be taking place in the same rusted, polluted, cyberpunkish future. I can't wait to see what Cameron does with it.

Also, is it just me, or did anyone get a big anime vibe from Avatar? Especially Sigourney Weaver's Avatar. She looked like a character pulled right out of an anime, except rendered in near 100% photo-realistic precision.
