Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

You can recognize Barlowe's stuff pretty well...I think. Chest-nostrils, protruding balance organs, thoracic brain cases, that sort of stuff. I guess you're hip to Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials, Expedition, and his work for Star Wars.

Ahh, I see. Sounds very collaborative. I guess now that you mention it, some of the wildlife had a Barlowe-like quality, but also different in some ways from his usual stuff. Either way, it all looked great to me.

Speaking of Barlowe, I'd love to see a big budget 3D film based on either his Inferno book, or his incomplete but very cool Thype character.

Thype

Well, at least we know the jujubees industry is alive and kicking in the 22nd cenutry.

What would've really sent it over the top is if Col. Quaritch was actually eating jujubees when he delivered that line.

(note to self: must buy some jujubees at the concessions counter for my next Avatar screening)

I just don't want to support its marketing and potentially its director's intentions by going to see it in its first few weeks of release, but no way in f&*$town am I going to miss a friggin 3D sci-fi epic done by one of the greatest directors of our time.

Then why does it matter if you see it in the first few weeks of release or later on? Even at the more expensive IMAX ticket prices, your financial contribution to this film's box office will not make a big difference either way.

Honestly, this film is frickin' amazing. I've seen it twice since it opened, first with my brother at the Thursday midnight IMAX show, and then again today with a friend of mine. I may even go again tonight at midnight since my brother already bought another ticket for the midnight show, and he doesn't have anyone to go with. That's right, I will probably see this 3 times before the weekend is over. I haven't done anything like this since Jurrasic Park. Plus, I can't let my bro wander into the wilds of Pandora all alone.

When I got out of the theater (completely sold out packed house) this afternoon, it was freaking electric. I got the distinct impression that everyone in that gigantic IMAX theater loved the shi* out of it. It was one of those experiences where you just know that the film blew everyone away, and I'm not just talking 3D and special effects.

This may not sway you, but if you liked Final Fantasy (I did as well) then you will quite possibly have a near religious experience with Avatar.

Everyone keeps talking about the "hype" that Avatar had, but frankly, I think this film is way under-hyped.

I kinda agree with the comparisons to the 77 Star Wars (yes, I think it's that fricking good). It's amazing, and I want to see it several times in the theaters as it'll be a while until I can watch it in 3D again.

Absolutely. It's not a movie, it's an event. 3D televisions are going to be off the walls expensive, and I'm going to be in college and buying camera equipment. I'm gonna take this voyage as many times as I can before it's gone :(

Seriously? Damn, I guess I'm wrong. Still, 1,200 could be an investment in camera equipment...or tuition :P
But hell, I'm still going to see it at least two more times.

My god the last few pages of this thread have been painful. Very painful.

Onward.

What themes did I take from the movie?

1. Living harmoniously with the environment.
2. Greed is bad (sorry gecko).
3. You can be redeemed.
4. I am awkwardly attracted to tall blue chicks with tails.

Damn. In any type of internal creative environment that in any way even primitively appears to be that of an artist, or just breathing, you would have to be dead in every possible way to not have seen how remarkable this film was on so many levels. Definitely in the same vein as when you were young and saw Star Wars(77). Was the story ultimately layered in the deepest subtext known to cinema, not really and it didn’t need to be. The scenes in the same way as classic Disney were solidified in an emotional ground, sort of the whole theme of the movie. It kills me when I hear someone or read a review by a critic who says they came out of it feeling nothing, but oh yeah the effects were alright. I mean are you serious. Might need to look at that emotional quotient you’ve got going. Probably why you are writing about it and not doing it coach.

Amazing film! Was almost mad I had to take off the glasses and go back to the normal world.

Everyone I saw the film with awkwardly agreed with that statement. I don't think I've ever felt more like a complete nerd in my entire life.

Honestly, it's not that you're awkwardly attracted to tall blue women with tails... you're attracted to natural beauty (large expressive eyes, etc. etc.), encasing a strong, sensitive, demur, feminine personality.

I felt the same way. Watching it made me feel warm and simultaneously lonely.

I could pull this thread into a non-discuss area instantly, but let me just say, in scientific terms... that it would not surprise me if the universe eventually reveals human-kind to NOT be the most beautiful and sophisticated creation. Okay... now take that statement for what it is... a meaningless comment on the artistic nature of this film.

It would take an amazing film to make me see it, instead of having another viewing of Avatar in the coming weeks... (more likely DAYS).

Yes, the story wasn't very deep at all. I wish it had more powerful themes and subtext... and less of the currently-so-trendy-green message, but those two elements didn't matter to me as I sat there in the dark... thanking God for my working senses... as I took in every frame of Cameron's technicolor acid-trip.

I wonder what would happen if you had intercourse with a Na'vi chick while your tails are also connected. Would it be an increasing feedback loop of orgasmic pleasure? If so then yes please, I'll have some of that.

In fact that's precisely how it works. Sexual contact for Na'vi is also a direct neural linkage. It's the most intimate sex imaginable.
