Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Just saw the movie and definitely liked it - didn't blow my mind but I liked it. The 3D was done well, it looked crisp and it was done in a way that wasn't over the top/in your face.

I think the na'vi characters were developed well and the lead character's relationship with the lead na'vi girl was very believable.

The detail in this movie is mind boggling and Pandora is a very beautiful place I'd like to visit.

I haven't seen any toy lines for Avatar, are there any? Very weired that there wouldn't be.

Just came back from the movie.

It was simply amazing! I loved every minute of it! I liked as well, that the 3D was not too over the top. I really liked the story as well, so no complaining from my side :D

The sad thing is, that this is just what would happen/happened in real life as well. Humans rip others of and even kill people to get more money and more power. I guess we have to deal with that and just try to make it better.

Spoiler alert:
I think what is really special about this movies is, that there is not too much going on story wise in the beginning. And this is a good thing in my eyes. When Jake learns the life of the na'vi we really get to feel this other world. We really get to know how this world is by seeing him learn. I really enjoyed this part. Cameron wanted to get us into this/his new world and he definitely succeeded!

You early-Avatar-Seeing-German-Bastard!! :Drogar-Happy(DBG): just kidding. Please report after.

Haha, yeah must have some benefits to be in Hong Kong! Going back to Germany on Sunday though... those 5 months went so fast!

Great fun at the screening and afterparty.

I think this one is going to do okay.

Rub it in. No really... I'm enjoying the rare feeling of envy :)

I'm very very tempted to catch the midnight showing in one of two theaters close by... I'm presently trying to decide how tired I am... can I do 12a to 2:30a? Hmm...

It was my distinct impression that it did not suck.

That is the understatement of the decade.

Saw the midnight show. Just got back from Pandora... whoops, I mean I just got back from the Imax theater.

Biggest complaint about the film is that to view it in 3D, I had to wear those nerdy 3D glasses that resemble swimming goggles. That's it, everything else about Avatar was :D:love4::kali::Drogar-Shock(DBG)::thumbup::thumbup::beer::2vrolijk_08:

I had the buddy holly looking 3D glasses, pretty comfortable and they worked really well.

I will agree with Nektonic and ALL of his smileys! Simply put, it was an amazing film. I was waiting for the long boring portion the critics were blogging about but it never came for me. I thought the story was simple and effective, just like it should be sometimes. If you see this and you absolutely should, You must put on the Buddy Holly's, pay the extra money, and WATCH IT IN 3D DAMMIT!! Cameron has not missed a beat and it was money very well spent. I have never seen anything like it. and frankly I don't think we will for a few years at least.

Yep. I don't know about the whole Star Wars theater experience of 1977 because I wasn't even born yet, but the next closest thing would probably be when The Matrix came out ten years ago. Avatar is like that, a truly amazing experience that is head and shoulders above just about every big budget superhero, action, sci-fi, and fantasy epic (except LOTR) Hollywood has released this decade.

I think there is potential for a sequel to Avatar, but I don't know if I would want one because it felt complete enough for me as is. Although, Cameron is one of the few masters of the sequel, so who knows, maybe he could pull off an amazing one for the world of Pandora.

I just saw it a few hours ago. I'm still speechless. I went in expecting something, and then was completely blown away. The CG, the character development, The score...I can't think of a word, or words, to describe it. Definitely taken it's rightful place among my top 5 favorite movies, which by the way, James Cameron takes up three of.

I give it a B- for content and an A+++ for execution. Visually it is everything people have said, dazzling work. Not quite photoreal but real enough, and the performances come through the CGI characters. I thought it was a pretty good movie, but not a great one. It's a little too obvious and on the nose in its storytelling. Nothing about this story surprised me at all, but that's because I've seen Little Big Man, Dances with Wolves, Last of the Mohicans, Pocohantas, The New World, and read all the ERB Mars books. That said, Cameron did a version of this story pretty well. By the end, you cared, and that's what matters. I also found the score, like the story, to be nothing more than serviceable, but that's because I've heard the score for Star Trek II, Wolfen, Aliens, Glory, Braveheart, Titanic, it was James Horner's greatest hits. The most egregious self plagarizing is the N'avi theme, which is nearly the same as the theme for Glory. But that's nitpicking I guess. This movie is a pretty thrilling experience in 3D, and unless you have a heart of stone it's hard not to get swept away. I would like Cameron to start pushing the envelope with his stories as much as he pushes the envelope with technology.

I've seen nothing of the main blue characters in Avatar that appear THAT much better than the human beings in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Comperable storylines? Comperable performances?

What makes Avatar any better than Final Fantasy?

It looked much better than final fantasy IMO. And it was a MUCH better film in almost every aspect. And final fantasy looked amazing. that tells me something. Nothing as far as CGI is touching this. period. the eyes had a soul behind them.

It's an incremental difference, but it is a difference. The characters feel alive. The characters in Final Fantasy felt like mannequins. When you see the creatures in Avatar in the context of the scenes, and the way little details accumulate, they work. Are they 100 percent real? No, but they are better than the humans in Final Fantasy. Both graphically and from a performance standpoint.

Just saw the film with my wife. We both enjoyed in immensely. The 3D was also better than I expected. It showed off the forest nicely and wasn't 3D for 3D sake. Which always bugs me.

I agree with Richard's comments. There was life behind those eyes. Completely believable.

James Cameron has another winner on his hands.

I noticed Cameron not once broke the plane of the screen. Nothing came AT you or was positioned to be in front of the screen. Those shots have always been the most taxing on your eyes, because they have to focus in a way that's not natural. I didn't get even a twinge of eye strain watching this. The screen was just a window INTO the movie.

Yes. This is what I meant by 3D for 3D sake. I hate it in 3D movies when a character, for example, picks up a water gun and starts spraying at someone so we get the POV shot
right at us. This film had none of that. Just gave a wonderful depth to the forest scenes.

It blows my mind how much time is spent in dark rooms on computers trying to make things look like real life.
