Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Not sure if we'll have 3D here in my town. We don't have Imax and our screens are pathetically small these days.
But, I'll check it out, and maybe hit a few bars there 'and' on the way back. For one thing, I love James Cameron and if Sigourney Weaver is in it also, as I loved her in the Alien(s) franchise, well, I'm down for that. What else can I say? I trust both of them. Wtf.

Tonight, 7PM PST.

It's an odd choice: supposing that the film is basically just visually accomplished, with little by way of story and character - and deciding therefore to see it in a format where visual impact is curtailed, and story and character are what's left to carry the experience...

...not that there's anything wrong, with that.

This movie appears to be long on special effects and CGI, and a little short on story.

I wait for it on Netflix.

Meh.

You people! What does James Cameron have to do to earn your respect! There is a handful of directors whose movies I will see in the theater no matter what, and he is one of them. He's earned it. Even if the film was getting Waterworld level reviews I'd be there opening night.

Really? Not me. I will see it in the theatre though, no doubt.

No way will I run out to see a movie on opening night when the trailers haven't quite captured me. I'm just not really interested in this one, not sure why.
Probably a good thing. My expectations are low so that will make it easier for me to be blown away.

I will see it over the holidays though. This film deserves a big IMAX screen and a pair of 3D glasses.

Just to be fair.

MAH

Now I'm wishing I'd seen Terminator Salvation, so as to be able to place that in context...

I think the quote is from his tirade that was captured on the set of TS and then leaked to the internet. It's not actual dialog from the movie.

If I don't see it in the theater it's because I'm still punishing him for Titanic. I'll never get those three hours back, and I'm still pissed about that.

I'll "respect" a director when he chooses to develop the characters in more depth rather than hide the lame story and the by-the-numbers cliches behind some mere eye candy.

You haven't even seen the movie!!!...When I talk about respect, I talk about what the filmmaker has done in the past. He's earned mine just for making Aliens. Even the least effective of his movies are worth watching. I'm saying he deserves the benefit of the doubt. The movie may be bad. I gave George Lucas the benefit of the doubt with The Phantom Menace and wished I'd hadn't, but he deserved it at the time.

I think Sad Max has seen it....not sure though, but something about his behavior makes me believe it :D

Got my ticket for tomorrow! And I am ahead of time as well :)

Went to the cast and crew screening, last night at Grauman's Chinese. Good times.

*edit* When I woke up this morning, it was with a sad chunk of irony in mind: this was after all primarily an American production, and American power - well, America's existence as a nation, really - is predicated upon the virtual annihilation of the indigenous people who were here first. And now we make up fictionalized stories along similar lines, and root for the indigenous people to win.
