T2i AV monitor out different than HDMI out?

hey all I don't have a miniHDMI to HDMI cord so I was just using the AV cable that came with my T2i and plugged it into a monitor but noticed that the LCD on the camera turns off when the AV cable is plugged in.

i have 2 questions:
1 - is it possible to have both on at the same time?
2 - does the HDMI out work this way as well? or does it let you keep the LCD on the cam on simultaneously?

You can have the camera LCD working at the same time as an external monitor on both the 7d and the t2i but the monitor must be a laptop.

The trick is to use the bundled software EOS utility and select remote shooting. You can also expand the screen on your laptop to get a much better picture than hdmi or the camera LCD.

This is extremely useful for pulling focus !!!

The downside is that the frame rate suffers and the longer the usb cable the more it suffers. I've uses a 3 ft usb cable with both the t2i and 7d to pull focus this way and it was very workable.
5 months ago when I posted a thread about this Kholi said he was gonna run out and get a netbook and stick it on top of his 7d ! Pretty cool .. i wonder if he ever did it.

All my work is tripod or slider. This trick has really saved my back and neck on low shots, especially low sliding shots !!!

Does the 7D work the same way, it can't as I remember reading someone who uses 3 monitors with his 7D. Also I tried the EOS Utility with my laptop and I must say the quality is not very good and it is something I would never use because of it.

I wonder how a small Lcd screen would look, cause if it's like the laptop then I will stick with the 3" lcd on the camera as I just shot a video and minus the sun I had no problem what so ever focusing and seeing my subject clearly.

try with a very short usb cable, not the one in the box, quality improves

failing that, stop past your local rental house and plug in a portable hdmi monitor

(they should let you do it for free) that way you can make informed decisions about what is best for you

Great idea, thanks for posting here on the forums!

I have noticed that the Display looks Different with the USB/AV . The color BLack is more noticeable hence its easier to FOCUS than HDMI unless you have a very expensive LCD monitor, as oposed to a Cheaper lliliput or IKAN 480res.
