Automatic Video Downconversion for Field Editing

Basically I am working with a little field laptop running PP3 and while I have a lot of external drives I would still prefer to downres my files to lighten the load on my laptop and be able to keep all the downres'd footage in one place so I don't have to driveswap.

Taking a P2 card with a bunch of 1080p footage on it, copying it off to an external HDD and then plugging the HDD into the laptop and be able to point premiere at the footage and have it grab it all and start converting it and writing it out to the local laptop HDD for use in premiere.

Anyone have any tips/info on this?

Thanks,

Joe

Cineform Aspect HD, and dont need to downconvert, edit in full res!!!

Even in a cheap, slow, old computer.

although, PremPro cs3 don't run in a old computer, I think.

You could also take a look at 'P2 Forge' that will batch convert from card to HDD before you Ingest to Premiere.

That workflow may suit you as well.

What's the point in recording in 1080 if you're just going to down rez it right away? Are you planning on saving the 1080 clips on a archived hard drive for later use on other projects or a later full-rez remix of the project??

Yeah, sorry for the lack of detail in the original post. Basically just doing a rough cut as I go, looking at and linking up clips as I go really. Can't do that on a laptop with 10gb free so I need to work with downres'd compressed footage. There are of course some downsides but overall I am not worried about it.

Once I get back I take the high res stuff, put it on a large array and import the high res footage in place of the low res stuff. Have to deal with repointing the file paths of the footage but that shouldn't be a very big deal.

Thanks by the way for the references you guys, I started playing with P2 Forge but it seems really buggy and for some reason my camera refuses to be recognized via USB2.0 on this laptop, to be fair I am using a PCMCIA card to get the USB2 port so I don't even know if that would work.

Also looking into Cineform now, problem isn't the playback speed or the resolution but the size of the files on the HDD, cineform may fix that but I would really like a solution that automates the whole process more fully (pulling the footage off the card and making 2 separate copies, 1 for storage, 1 for use.)
