In my opinion, it would be an extremely useful tool to be able to quickly and easily set up a gamma curve for each scene/shot. You simply frame your shot (a beautiful sunset, for example), hit the auto-gamma function, and it takes the darkest area of the image and sets that to true black and sets the lightest area of the image to true white. You can then adjust the black and the white points up or down according to your own taste. Of course it would also be useful for the camera to store the gamma setup info along with each shot.
No more blowin out the whites so that you can see the detail in the darks... no more turning everything dark into true black so that you can maintain your whites. This option would be simple, fast, and allow for endless image possibilities.
