Autofocus while recording, video.

I don't think that's auto focus at all. I think he is just really fast with his hands and likes to make auto focus sounds kinda like Larvell Jones from Police Academy

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? It is AF obviously... but maybe it's working only because he was taking a photo at the same time? hmmmm :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I'm not sure at all that it is AF. According to the 7D Owner's Manual, AF doesn't work when you start a movie recording.

Maybe it means there is no continuous auto-focus during movie recording.

That looks and sounds like a half-press auto-focus to me. If it's not, I'm mighty impressed by their speed and accuracy, and mighty confused by the acoompanying sound.

You can also see it in this video here at 0:42, when the girl is waving at the camera.

Even if it is auto-focus, it's not very useful for creative focus pulls. Not at all. It has that jarring stutter to it that whips you out of whatever is happening.

but it would be a nice feature to quickly get focus back in a shot without having to stop recording. I sure hope you have it right. I don't have a 7D yet (w8ing on Amazon) so all I'm going on is the Owner's Manual that I downloaded.

I just confirmed on my 7d that there is live AF during recording. However, it doesn't work very well.

While recording you can hold the AF-on button and it will find focus. However, in low light situations it bumps the ISO in order to do so. I'll do some more tests. But there is definitely a form of autofocus while recording.

So. I believe my 5d also focuses in this fashion, but the 7d certainly seems more accurate. The auto focus, however, is not completely auto since you have to press a button and it also completely changes the settings in order to open up if it can't find focus.

Pretty useless. But, could help if you're shooting run and gun.

That youtube video is absolutely demonstrating the AF while recording. It also shows that though the Tamron 17-50 appears to be loud, it focuses fast. WAYYY faster than the 50 1.8 I just tested. I will try with a 24-70 shortly.

This could be useful then... I wonder about a USM lens like the EF 50mm 1.4? You could quickly get on focus and then follow manually without having to switch the AF on the lens off. That's a neat feature of the USM primes I bought that the Tamron doesn't have. The Tamron owner's manual even cautions against manual operation of the focus ring while the lens is switched to AF saying it could damage the lens and void warranty.
