C300: Autofocus upgrade on Canon c300 mark 1

Hi Folks,

I'm still working away happily with a C300 mark 1. Would love to the Mark 11 but can't justify the cost outlay at the moment.

I very rarely shoot 4K, and when I do I use the Canon 1DC. Love the images from it too.

I bought my C300 before the DAF upgrade was released and I'm debating whether I should put my camera in to get it done - seem like a lot of cash for the upgrade now the camera has dropped in price so much (£500 for the autofocus upgrade here in the UK still).

I've some personal projects coming up that I think it would be really useful - or using a camera with something similar would be helpful.

Any advice on what to do? Should I put money into improving the C300 or put my cash into a new body (maybe cheaper DSLR) for those autofocus shots I want?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

If the majority of your clients are not demanding 4K, and won't for the foreseeable future, I think it would be worthwhile investment, depending on what kinds of programming you shoot. I bought the C100 with the DPAF and I rent C300 MKIs and MKIIs, depending on the job requirements and once you have DPAF, you really rely on it, especially when shooting handheld, outdoor in bright sunlight unless you are using the eyepiece and even then, it's still handy.

I think the DPAF upgrade for your C300mk1 will be very worthwhile! I decided to keep my old C300mk1 (I have the C300mk2) and the mk1 comes in handy. Several projects that still require the mk1. Also, I have encountered some early C300mk1 without DPAF upgrade that don't look much like the upgraded mk1s. The DPAF upgraded looks better. I suspect that early samples need a sensor swap, but I don't know... Canon charges the same for the upgrade, so a plus regardless.

I got the DPAF upgrade in the C300 as soon as it was introduced. Though not on the same league as the DPAF of the Mark II, it helps in acquiring focus fast. In handheld situations it helps a lot. Given the crash in price of the C300 Mark I, it is pointless to sell it off. With DSLR there is the challenge of getting XLR mics attached as well as lack of features like waveform. So better to update the C300 to DPAF.
