"Auto" button for best look?

I've been using the auto button whenever I turn my camera on to get the best look. Could I achieve a more "film-ish" look or better color by using the other controls rather than the auto?

Re: "Auto" button for best look?

Achieving a film look with the camera is, of course, very subjective. There are a whole host of controls that influence that look so it's a hard question to answer.

Slightly underexposing your shots using the manual iris control can help in making your footage more saturated. Using either f5 or f6 will obviously go very far in achieving that filmic feel.

I would advise you to experiment with the settings. Learn what they do. Probably the best investment you could make right now would be to buy Barry Green's new book and DVD. He goes into great detail on how to achieve certain looks and demonstrates them on the DVD. There's nothing that's going to beat that as a learning aid.

You can find info on the book and DVD here:

Auto Iris?

There's a button on the side of the camera that says "auto". It forces all sorts of settings into "auto" mode at the press of a button -- very useful for a situation where you just HAVE to get a shot, regardless -- like, say, a breaking news story or something like that. Or, what if someone had never used the camera and didn't know how to use it -- pushing "auto" would let the camera take over all sorts of functions (including auto-iris, autofocus, auto white balance, etc) and that way you'd know you were going to get the shot. Probably not as good a shot as if a skilled operator manually set each setting, but hey, in the hands of an unskilled operator the "auto" button will probably do a better job than they would anyway.

Also, interesting thing about the auto button is that it's the only way the DVX can employ automatic picture gain. In "auto" mode, you set the limit of how much gain you want the camera to use, and it'll decide how much to employ, from 0 all the way to the limit. There's no other way to get automatic gain control on the DVX.

Re: "Auto" button for best look?

Y'know, that button always mystified me. I thought it was just to put the focus back to auto, since that's where it's located. That seemed silly since it's right next to a switch that does the same thing. Now it makes more sense. But now I have another question. I leave my camera on the F5 setting as it's set up from the factory. So when I power up, everything is already on auto. Will pushing the auto button change anything?

Re: "Auto" button for best look?

The scene file is unrelated to the auto function. There's a menu called AUTO SW (or something like that) which controls what functions the AUTO button will take over. Auto doesn't have anything to do with the scene file; it controls white balance, focus, iris, gain, stuff like that.

Re: "Auto" button for best look?

Oh, jeesh, I have been pressing the auto button 'cause I thought it would automatically make my video look like film, automatically uprez it using disjecta's routine, automatically convert it to widescreen, automatically apply editing according the current director setting in the scene file, and finally... automatically get it distributed through IFC.

Dang, no wonder I haven't seen my work on IFC yet. ;D

Re: "Auto" button for best look?

I don't think that it's the look as much as it is substance.
