I am going to be filming a project for the next couple of weeks and am having trouble deciding which mode to film in. since i am new to the 100b any comments on your experience would be help full.

I simply want to know if i should film in 4:3 or squeeze mode. Correct me if im wrong, but if I shoot in Squeeze will i be able to author the project on dvd in 16:9 so that the dvd player will convert it to 4:3 on full screen tv's. I want the film to have the most playback options without killing the quality.

I usually shoot my video (For eventual DVD) in squeeze mode. Technically you lose some resolution as the DVX is basically designed as a 4:3 camera and electronically creates a 16:9 aspect ratio (Drops pixels) but the images are great on television in DVD form anyway. The "movie" widescreen look is real cool and since the data gets compressed to Mpeg-2 on the DVD...I say you can't appreciate the additional resolution from 4:3 anyway. If your TV has a 4:3 screen, be sure to change your menu settings on the television to 16:9.

this is true, your dvd player will convert it for you on 4:3 tv with letterbox, & full screen on 16:9. (don't think you even need to change tv to 16:9 setting as older tellys dont have this.)
there is a slight resolution loss with squeeze, but there is also if you crop it in post & then uprez to anamorphic 16:9, although photozoom pro & instant hd both do fine jobs of this

If you want it to be widescreen on widescreen TVs, and letterboxed on 4:3 TVs, then shoot in Squeeze and author as an anamorphic 16:9 DVD. The DVD player will take care of converting for 4:3 TVs.

Hey Barry...

If I were to shoot a video in 4:3 and crop it to a 16:9 ratio in post, can I still design the dvd to display the video in the correct widescreen format on a widescreen tv with the Architect templates? Or do I have to shoot squeeze? I figured 4:3 was fine with a crop, but now I'm unsure for some reason. :(

You could convert the footage to 16:9 by rendering the cropped file out to a 16:9 MPEG file, which would then work appropriately in DVD Architect.
