Audio recording question

Hi,

I asked this before but didn't get a full answer...

I'm shooting a short tomorrow and we're recording the audio separately on a DAT system. The video will be shot 24PN and brought into a FCP timeline using the DVCPRO HD 720p preset for editing which has a frame rate of 23.98fps.

My question is, what settings should the audio guy use to make sure that the audio will match the video? He's saying the audio should be recorded at 30fps, but is that right? In a previous post, someone said that audio doesn't have a frame rate, but a sample rate. If this is right, then what sample rate should my guy use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're going to have to manually sync and check for and fix drift no matter what you do if you use an external audio recorder and you are not using jammed timecode. So, at that point, you should use 16-bit 48kHz at a minimum because it matches DV's spec, which can help in sync, but you'll still have a manual sync, and you'll still get drift over long periods of time. If you can go even higher res audio, then you might as well (24-bit). That'll help with mixing/effects in post, then you can bring it down to 16/48 as the last step.

Does the DAT have timecode as tainted pointed out? If it doesn't, then shooting anything except standard 29.97 is a giant pain in the patuckos....

DAT is also a DEAD format for so many people. Solid state is the way to go. I used to own the Fostex FR2 which was capable of 24 bit 192khz sample rates with timecode option. The sound devices have an even cooler unit that does 4 tracks of audio all onto compact flash.

If ya don't go solid state then harddrive systems like the metacorder and Diva are much cooler.

Again. DAT Sucks! But if it's free, then DAT ROCKS! lol

Audio does not have a framerate but TC does.
The important thing is to be consistent with the Timecode and video fps.
So if he is indeed recording on a TC dat and you are recording in 23.98 (24p) it's importand that he does this as well, and set's his TC generator to 23.98 as well.
Otherwise it wont match up and the TC is useless.
Depending on his DAW it's also important that the movie file he gets for spotting is playing at the right speed as well.
