I'm using an external microphone for recording audio/sound on my 550d/t2i. It's a Hama mic, nothing amazing only around $60 or in my country 40 GBP. Im using Magic Lantern on my camera and i was wondering what the best audio settings would be? my mic only has an option for high/low on the top. So what should i set my L digi gain & R digi gain and general Decibal setting. I have external stereo set. I just need to get the best possible audio settings. im filming skateboarding so that needs to be said.

My answer may help but it is not the one you are looking for. You need to set the levels to the correct settings to get the sound you want to hear in the final output of the project. If the "high/low" settings on your mic are impedance then chose "low". I generally set my ML T2i/550D to 0 or 10 Digital and 6 to 18 Analog. I have no idea if this is the standard but it gives me the best audio, in terms of signal to noise, in my testing. As far as the Decibel level I find it is most natural when in the yellow and only going red every so often. It seems Alex has set the level meter colors slightly more sensitive then actual peaking. I assume this is because the cameras pre amps and A/D convertors have a hard time even before you hit zero.

The best advice I can give you is to try different settings and listen to the results. If you know someone that is an audiophile or a musician that understands recording ask them to listen to you test files. Basically there are right and wrong settings but there is a lot of grey areas based on your desired result.

I get more audio then leaving L&R digi gain on 0. Because I've previously been getting low audio. I'm not so much worried about super great quality audio more that its just at the right levels. Music will be over the footage anyway most of the time.
