Audio Indoors

I have an Azden Sgm 2x.

My question is: I'm doing a shoot indoors tonight, it's quite echo-y. There are only two actors, but I'm wondering if I should use the full Shotgun or just the short barrel.

Thanks

Well, the short barrel is an omni-directional. That means that it will record absolutely everything.

The long barrel is a shotgun, which isn't suited for interiors. It's especially poor for reverberant interiors.

Your best bet is to look at renting a hypercardioid condenser for the night if you can find a local rental house. Other than that, if this is the only mic you have, just make sure that you frame tight and get the mic in as close as you possibly can.

Also put carpet on the floor and soft furniture in the corners, pretty much cover any hard surface you can with thick cloth to absorb echos.

Get as many moving blankets as you can, the quilted kind. Try to get the white on one side, black on the other (used to be a lot of 'em on eBay). Hang 'em wherever they can be off camera. Use them as giant bounce cards. Use (or emulate) a background stand setup (two stands + crossbar) and hang 'em with a-clamps. Get as much soft stuff in there as possible - if you can "build" a quilted room or alcove around the shot - even if it has openings - it will help, sometimes a lot.

Naturally this won't work for wide shots, but with a few stands, you can easily make a fabric "wall" at the shooting position, and you can make it BIG. Even getting one soft wall in the equation can help. And it can be done very, very quickly.
