Audio hiss

Thanks -

At this point I am learning the camera. Before doing the feature that I have also asked about on this forum, I am trying to do a few "one man band" jobs to get familiar with the camera.

For this small project I just want to mic one guy - get his audio where it needs to be and roll. It is one guy talking to the camera - surely I don't need a sound man for that.

While it could be a thousand issues that leads to a hiss I have tried to narrow down my problem with hopes that I have somehow missed a setting or I am overlooking something obvious.

Again, I get great audio from the front mic input. It sounds great. Therefore, I can technically shoot what I need to tomorrow (yes - without a soundman). However, I want and need to know why I can't get the same audio out of the rear of the camera. The levels out of the rear of the camera are poor and the hiss a deal-breaker.

No one has jumped out and mentioned anything that I am missing and I have tried the suggestions that have been offered. I am now concerned that perhaps the camera has a problem. I plan to call the Panasonic Rep and see what he can tell me.

Again, I appreciate all the helpful comments and if you can add anything please feel free.... while I dial the phone.

Thanks Again,
Mat

Hi,

Your issue sounds like an impedence mismatch. So you need to know what the output level of your mic is, that is in the mic's instruction manual. you then need to set the menu on the audio menu section to show that it is a mic level input and you need to make sure that the switches on the back are in accordance with all of the above.

Hope that helps,

Jan

Mat, I don't have a 300 but it sounds like you've done at least a fair amount of scientific method trouble-shooting there.
Assuming that you've now read the manual, have the mic/line/phantom switches set right, and have tried the suggestions already made . . .
I'd say that since the front input signal is fine, I would definitely have a tech. look into a problem with the back inputs' signals. It does happen.

Get a big hunk of wood- and knock on it.

I know, I used both but not a lot of difference as you expect fro 10 dB !!

Cees-I don't have a 300 but I do have an hpx170 and dvx100b. In the recording menu, is the audio set to -50db or -60db? -50db will give you more signal (higher level) which means you have to turn the pots down to keep the signal from blowing out.
