audio help please

Hi there I have an xha1 and I am having problems recording 2 track audio at the same time is there a trick or secret im missing ??? I wanted to use my shotgun for the interview and the on board for ambient sound but when I connect the shotgun to the xlr im only getting one chanel of audio. Does anybody know how i can get it to work ?? do I have to have 2 xlrs to record to tracks ?

Yes, onboard audio is automatically disabled when XLR is turned on.

does that mean I cant have channels independently like on the DVX?

If I were you I would use a lav for the interview and the shotgun for the ambient noise.
The lav will give you MUCH better audio.
