Audio Gain/peaking problem

New to the camera but I shot a couple shows with it and noticed the audio seems to be more sensitive (for lack of a better definition).

I plug in both the sennheiser lavs and they record fine to the cam. when I get the footy into the computer and on the timeline, it seems a little bit "peaky"

i.e. when person 1 starts talking (after a quit spell while the other is talking) the volume is fairly high. then after a few words it goes down to almost a low enough level where I have to correct in post. I did a quick check thru the menus but couldn't find any setting that I think would correct this???

I popped the same mics on a hmc 150 during the last show just to record the audio at a more consistant level. I have a feeling it's just that I don't have some setting right. Anyone else see this or know what I should look for?

I've been using phantom power even though I have battery power on the sennheisers. Think that could be the issue?

That's what I thought originally. But they are in Manual. and it's not really the same effect as having the AGC on. (which would turn up the volume when nothing is being said.) It appears to turn up the volume when someone STARTS speaking for about 1 to 2 seconds. (or on second though, it may be turning DOWN the volume a little after they start speaking) I'm sure there's some tweaking to do somewhere but I can still use the 150 for the audio till I get this resolved.

Wierd thing is...I don't have the same problem on the 150 so I wonder if I have to "fine tune" the mics to the FS100s? I don't think I should have to but......

Huh.... I guess you could try turning off the phantom power, or taking out the batteries... but I can't think how anything in the mic could have an effect over time like that.

Hope you get it fixed, and I'd be interested to hear how.

My guess is that you have the limiter enabled, and so you're winding up the gain too high but never seeing the meters flick into the red.

Menu --> Audio --> Audio Limit --> Off

And button-on 'Status Check 1/6' for setting your levels for a reasonable clue of where the audio levels are.

Nope. It's set to off on both cams. Staus check is what you would expect. More testing next time I get a chance. Maybe adjusting the sensitivity on the mics?.....

It sounds like a phasing problem on playback.
On your timeline make your audio two separate mono files instead of a stereo track.
