Audio for interview : help please!

Hi there, I'm going to be shooting some pretty straight forward interview style films in the next few weeks using a dvx100. I have a lapel microphone from a dictaphone i have but the audio cable is way too small to fit the dvx camera audio in socket.

I have done some online research and to buy a decent shotgun mic of sorts is looking quite pricey and possibly not the right mic for this sort of thing? Anyone got any good suggestions as the audio needs to be good quality and generally in the past the standard built in mic hasn't been great.

Thanks in advance.

Adam

If it isn't a problem that the mic is in the picture, a decent presentation microphone is easily borrowed, rented of bought. The long XLR cable to connect it to the DVX isn't expensive either (or can/will be found wherever your rent/borrow/buy the mic).

Of course you could buy a shotgun mic (Rode, Azden, Sennheiser, etc.) but they'll cost you more. I found out just by trying that the borrowed (and not very expensive) presentation micorophone the sometimes use at my son's school records nice interview talk. As long as the mic is close to the speaking person...

Just a suggestion...

I would suggest that you head over to the Audio forum here on DVXUser and start by reading the stickies. You'll find lots of handy information there, and a quick use of the search function in the Audio forum will also turn up a few recent threads on audio for interviews.

Don't cheap out on audio. The mic from your dictaphone is most likely not the right way to go, even if you adapt the connection. Renting can be much more practical in many situations, and you might want to go that route for now until you've learned a little more about sound and can better judge what you need (if you need) to purchase.

Also, check out the "Sound for Film and Television" DVD available through the DVXUser shop.

If you can't afford a new mic the adapting bits of kit are still going to cost you. You'd need an impedance matching transformer and then a male TRS/female mini plug cable. These would work but as Anomie and C2V mentioned your audio quality would be less than stellar.
