audio delay with ninja 2, Canon 5DIII

Hi guys,

I shot my first production with the ninja 2 recorders on camera B and C. pro res hq in 23.076p. Audio was fed wirelessly from our sound guy through the recorder's audio inputs. One ninja 2 is mine, the other rented. Both had audio delay while on a static interview. I think it's more like a video delay since I was monitoring Camera B and the lips of the talent had a delay. I was recording internally on CF cards for backup so I have good sync and my camera A is a C300.

Any ideas what could have happened?

I was really not impressed with the ninja2. It's my first atomos. My operators are used to using SmallHD DP6 on their cameras and they had a hard time with the smaller monitors. We do run and gun fashion events mostly. Also all those settings to get to shoot reminded me a little of trying to hack the cameras to work. I like running a camera through a strong, fast workflow.

Any other field recorders between between 1k and 2k that do the same job?

Thanks so much

video coding delay. Been with us ever since cameras started to have digital outputs. It takes time to convert real time into a digital stream, so the video reaching the Ninja is behind the audio. It's a fixed delay, so easily compensated for in the edit - BUT still very annoying. I do lots of work where I have the same problem when I record to an external device - often going via firewire into a MAC. It's quite disturbing to catch sight of the computer screen because it's so behind. Panning the camera is a very strange feeling watching delayed video!

Yes, the issue is with the 5DMKIII. It just is not a real video camera. Anything external has a lag and it seems the lag has been increased with the HDMI output firmware.

Thanks guys. Totally. I have a C300 and use these things as camera B and C but I'm trying to avoid them as much as possible.
This is what Atomos said to me:

We have found an audio delay from the Canon 5D Mark III, this was not in the beta version we tested at NAB so was a surprise to us as well. Canon are aware of the problem and looking into it. We are looking to see if we can implement a work around like we did for the Nikon D800 audio problems to help our customers.
