i just got a phone call from a friend askig me to video tape their dads 75th birthday celebration at his church tonight. i said yes but my problem is i have never shot any footage with my dvx100A since i got it back in october because of unfortunate circumstances.

so my questions are what type of scene settings would be best for this event?

should i change any settings in the default scene settings?

should i go hand held or tripod or both?

what type of angels should i try to capture?

which is best for this event 60i, 30p, or 24p?

all the questions u asked are subjective unfortunately. so i can only tell u what i'd do. I always shoot in 24p mode (unless i;m doing slowmo) cuz i prefer the look. that said i think 24p is less light sensitive (correct me if i;m wrong peeps) so that maybe a factor tonight.

We dont know what kinda light are shooting under so its kinda hard to suggest stuff. I;d say turn up detail coring (to reduce noise), lower master ped just a bit also. Take ur tripod...and shotgun mic.

Get lots of emotion shots. Close ups some peoples emotions (especially the birthday boy). those with look nice in an edit. think of interesting shots. its kinda hard to just tell u ....u kinda have to have an eye for it.

If anything, 24p will be more light sensitive. Your shutter speeds will go from 1/60th of a second to 1/48th, not much but its there.

I personally shoot a bunch of tight shots at events, but only knowing exactly whats happening at all times. If you don't, safer to be a little wider and not miss anything.

Make sure you're on a tripod. Way better than handholding. Turn OIS when on a tripod

If you have time play around with the DVX before you go. For me a tripod is a real pain sometimes at events. I would rather use a monopod . If you are trying to get close and putting the tripod legs out can be a hassle. People are bumping into them etc.

Ditto that. I picked up a $90 tripod at Best Buy that has a center column that pulls out and is a monopod which is cool. You could just put a 1/4 bolt in the tripod socket and tie a piece of string to it. Stand on the string, pull it tight and BAM-poor man's monopod. Beats nothing.

You're going to be around people and you'll be moving quite a bit and resetting your tripod for every shot might give you stable camera work but you might miss some shots. I shot a baby shower a couple of weeks ago and took a tripod but never used it. I didn't have time. Make sure your battery or batteries are charged and take plenty of tape.

I'd use 24p and keep your zooming to a minimum. Shoot EVERYTHING. If there are any decorations or birthday-type festive stuff shoot it. If there are any babies shoot'em. An establishing shot outside the church might be nice. You want people who watch the video later on to feel like they were there.

Good luck!
