FS7: Atomos shogun or XQD cards

Would just add to this thread... that depending upon the type of shoots you'll do most - really depends on whether or not you'll need an external recorder. The biggest limitation of the FS7 imo - is the implementation (or lack there-of) of LUTs. None in playback, none in S&Q, etc. So, if you're shooting with a director / client and need to show them a really nice image "on set" - especially during playback or don't want to burn in and limit your post choices, you are going to need an external recorder. But if by yourself - or with someone who's knowledgeable - internal is great.

You dont need an external recorder to show luts on set - just a monitor that supports luts like the 502.

You don't need an external recorder. A monitor which allows you to load a LUT will do the job. SmHD 502/702 ,Odyssey 7Q/7Q+ That's the reason I kept my 7Q after selling the FS700. It's a great monitor with loadable LUTs on set for your client/director.

Yes - sorry Morgan & Clermont are correct - there are other monitor / lut boxes you can use to send LUT signal to a larger client monitor... I personally think for the price of the 502 .. the pix E5 makes more sense... since it gives you the added ability to record externally should you ever want/need to.

Unless its been upgraded I believe the small HD7 will not send those LUT's to a 3rd monitor which I think is a terrible limitation. Don't know about the 502 . The 7Q will. The color accuracy of the OLED HD7 though is slightly better than the 7Q though the 7Q isn't bad.

I would avoid Shogun. Atomos calls it a 4k recorder but it won't accept a 4k SIGNAL from the FS7.

Has this been confirmed by atomos? I'm wondering if this applies to the atomos assassin as well. Since that's what I have. Cause I plan to keep it as a viewing monitor for the FS7 when I get it. And for my other cams as an external recorder.

The Small HD 702 is able to apply a LUT, and send that to the output (or not if you choose) with its current firmware; I believe the 502 is the same. I thought the DP7 Pro also acquired this ability when LUTs were enabled in its firmware, but I haven't used it.

The new XQD M cards are going to be significantly cheaper than G cards. B&H have the 128 GB M cards listed at $154 which is pretty fantastic. I'll be getting a stack of them at this price.

hmmm... yeah... wonder if this will mean another new card reader too? Or does the M series work w/ G series reader?

RE: XQD-M cards ...
I know they are write speed limited.
Can you record UHD 24 on them?
I have had exactly one, one day UHD job, and no sign of another ... but ...
Anybody know?

=mark=
Pittsburgh? Pittsburgh!

AFAIK, They'll need the updated USB3 reader which also has an SD card slot too. Small price to pay.

I guess the cards will come with the free USB2 reader like the G cards?

My G card came with a USB3 reader, so did the S card (not sure about the letter anymore, there are too many).
It won't surprise me if the M need it´s own reader as well ;-)

Hi all FS7 users, I am planning to get the FS7 in a couple of weeks or so, I was informed by one of the resellers that if I my budget cant stress for an external monitor then i should loose the 2x 128gb xqd cards and go for the shogun.

My question is should I go down this route of having an external recorder/monitor unit or get cards instead as my budget only can but one and loose the other.

best
Jeff

I have to agree with Dennis. I think you walk a slippery slope when you limit your recording options. If your budget is so tight you can't afford cards, you may need to rethink what your goal is here. Recording media is part and parcel to getting gear. If anything, I'd forgo the larger cards and perhaps wait until you are a bit more solvent to even get the recorder.
Now of course if you aren't getting the extension unit, then you can't record ProRes. If that's important to you, why not get EditReady and transcode?
Also, IMO, I don't like having large cards. Too restrictive. For example, I just finished shooting an ABC 20/20 where we where downloading cards as we were shooting. 3 cameras could cause a log jam and with a big card, you may not get it back in time during the shoot. And...with a big card with all that info, if it dumps, crashes or there was a problem in the down load, you lose a lot less material.
I have 8 64gb cards. Started out with 4 64's and would buy another two when I felt I needed to. I keep them face down in my carrier so I know they have been exposed. With that many cards, I'm able to hang on to them until a verification has been received that the material has been successfully loaded and duplicated. Have only 2 big cards could interrupt that work flow.

Hello I just got a card of 64 go sony release Mr. He works with MRW-E80 card reader. The card is sold with no or low cost player. But impossible to make it work with the FS7, because Sony has not yet released the updated firmware.

The free reader that came with my G Cards were definitely USB2 so I bought the mrw-e80, the new model USB3 reader is the mrw-e90 for the M cards.
