ATOMOS Samurai Reviews?

Hi, just load the samurai disk as ama volume, works great ( in MC 6). Qt reference not possible with ama files.

When recording from AF 101 to the Samurai, is it better to use the DNxHD or ProRes 422, if you are editing in Avid Media Composer 6?
What are the diffrences... quality, workflow etc?

It is imminent but...I dont believe that Atomos have released the DNxHD codec for the Samurai yet.

Someone correct me if I am wrong please.

When they do I would expect that it would be the best codc for you to use in Avidbecause the workflow would be native.

I.Q would be the same between codecs.

I am considering getting the Samurai or the PIX 240. First time using one of these devices so is the audio from the camera's XLR inputs included in the HD-SDI output to be recorded on the Samurai? I know the 240 has XLR inputs directly on it but didn't know about audio coming from the camera into the Samurai through the HD-SDI.

Yes, the audio from the camera's XLRs is embedded into its SDI output. So on the Samurai you will get two channels of audio in the SDI stream. On the PIX, you can actually record four channels (or is it six?) Two channels from the camera, and two channels from its onboard XLRs, but I think maybe if you used AES sources you can actually get four channels into the PIX, plus the two channels from the camera, so you could actually have six channels of audio.

Good. I just ordered the AF100 from EVS along with a Samurai. Also Barry, I don't know if it will have your book in it or not but they said that if so it would already be in the box with the camera.

To be completely accurate, the Samurai can record 12 channels of audio through the SDI in port. It's just that the AF100 is only going to supply two.

I have noticed that Atomos states that the Samurai will support the 24PsF output of the AF100. It also states that it will take the 2:3 pulldown out if you give it the standard HD-SDI as well. I guess I'm sort of confused as to if I would reap any benefits of going ahead with the 2PsF (which will kill my HDMI production monitor) or go ahead with the 60i wrapper that the AF100 will put out normally. Any suggestions?

Had my first 2 day shoot with the Samurai and wanted to make sure that if you have/use a Samurai is to be sure that your firmware is updated to the latest version. Mine was working flawlessly for about 2 hours and then it just shut down right in the middle of a shoot. It would come back up but would go back down shortly thereafter. It did feel a little warm but not hot. I was using a 120Gig SSD. After further investigation (luckily I had internet connectivity via a MiFi) I found that there was an update to the firmware (3.2.1) that actually addresses the issue of the Samurai shutting down during recording. After updating the firmware I experienced no other problems with the unit. It has performed great so far.
