C100: Atomos Samurai Blade : does it worth it ?

Hi,

after a few month of using my C100 with great pleasure, and being more than satisfied with the internal codec for web work, I now have to shoot a project that will be projected on large screens, so I'm looking into buying an Atomos recorder.

So, my option is The ninja II, around 500€ here in France, or the new Samurai Blade, double priced, 1000€...

I already own an atomos connect H2S converter I used for renting my C100 for live concert events (allowing me to plug it into HD switchers) ((and I must say it was impressive how the cam could easily be mixed with 3x priced ENG cam...)) so I can easily use the Samurai because the connect is made to fit in the battery slot. Then I just have to find a very small and thin SDI cable.

I also like the samurai blade because of its nice screen resolution, and also, I think that buying SDI over HDMI is more durable, and maybe give me more chance to use it in the future if I buy another camera...

But, its double priced. For durability, future investment, and better screen resolution.

what do you think, does it worth it ?

If you need a higher bit rate and comparing it to the Ninja 2 - yes the Samurai Blade is worth it. I played with it today at a trade show and the difference in the screen sharpness and clarity plus other great features makes it a better alternative to the Ninja 2. I just sold my Ninja 2 as I found the screen to be nearly useless plus I had no need for the higher bit rates it provides.

same boat as you man, I own H2s and c100 as well. Just on the cliff right now. the only difference is 422, which is color depth. Resolution wise is the same

Michael Bay uses 5D mark ii on his transformer movies, so C100 should be just fine.

Just if your colorist is bad at playing AVCHD then thats the only reason you buying a Blade.

without being a pixel peep and zoom in to 400%, you can not see the difference at all

ohh yeah~! green screen, if you are doing it, better jump to the blade, easier. difference is 1/4 color info (from 25% 420 to 50% 422).

The Ninja can 4:2:2 10 bit record only the monitor IPS, resolution, SDI (there are the overprice from ninja) but the codec are same.
I buought Samurai Blade and i'm so happy because I'm dop and I need a great monitor with great color/resolution so this Samurai Blade is my right arm (my left arm is exposimeter :))

ah ok I thought It was a 422 recorder but shawnvfx made me doubt.

so, Francesco, you don't regret paying the double price for the better resolution ?

no, I told you AVCHD from C100 is 4 2 0, which is 25% of the color info

Ninja is 4 2 2, 50%. only a quarter color difference

ah, my mistake.
For web works I think the difference is not noticeable, but for the big screen its different....plus, I sometimes have to shoot chromakeys, and for this, 422 is obligatory.

plus, shooting APR spares me of the conversion time...which can be huge if your dealing with several weeks of shooting.
