Atomos NinjA V+ Announced

No one is ever going to make this but I would buy a tiny box that is able to record in absolutely anything. Using a 'cinema camera' for news? They want XDCAM422 50Mb/s? No problem. You'd need to control it with an app though, presumably.

I always hoped they would do more with the Ninja Star.

A small little box you could tuck away somewhere that can do the RAWs and 10-bits and what not without the screen.

I would take one of those in a heartbeat over the gangly mess that is a Ninja + SDI module!

Needs a basic LCD that lists input type, framerate, record format, reel + clip numbers etc. and a good tally light. But I'd dearly love to clear some unneeded bulk from my build.

So much more manageable...have it on shoes, threads, velcro, maybe magnet-based somewhere on a cage.

I wouldn’t purchase this unless you specifically need that feature… feels like a premature release with a quick internal spec bump to accommodate Sony and stay relevant.

I’ll be interesting in a Ninja VI with a thinner and lighter body, better screen, lower power draw, SDI built in, etc etc.

Extremely thin, built-in battery with a 12 hour runtime that could charge via USB C...

Maybe also the swivel/tilt mount is the screen connection like a DJI screen mount, then the cable rather than connector can get spat out of the device somewhere and can flex/bend no problem.

God I hate external recorders.

I would love to get rid of external recorders as well, but seeing that I tend to always shoot with an external monitor, if it can monitor and record good/better codecs at an affordable price I'll take it.

For those requesting a small recorder without a monitor, what would you do for playback? Or would you also be simultaneously recording internally.

Yes! I wonder why it failed. Perhaps no one wanted to buy the CFast cards for it. Maybe the bigger market for Atomos is people who want to record to cheap / high-capacity media.

One thing that occurs to me is that Sony's SD card / CF Express type A slot would be interesting for a Ninja Star 2. If you just bought an external recorder to get around recording time limits or to make a copy for the client or to make proxies you can use SD cards. If you bought it for RAW you can use CF Express A.

It failed because it was difficult to confirm if the footage was safely captured. Perhaps also if the connection had been full HDMI, it might have inspired more confidence. If you had a faulty connection (especially on the camera end, which is as fragile as a micro/mini hdmi can be) you were screwed. With a screen you know if you are getting micro disconnects...

Ah, I didn't realise it was micro HDMI. I've actually been looking for a used one but that rules it out.

Theoretically speaking, any large body DSLR style cameras should include an internal SSD of, at least, 512 GB in size. Smartphones do and they have less internal space and lower prices. Canon R5 does its downsampled 4K HQ at 470 Mbps, which is 34 min per 128 GB or over two hours per 512.

Yeah I think so, I record internally when using an external recorder just in case. Or maybe a phone/app could allow viewing from a non-screen recorder somehow.

It would be great if they would/could add RAW input to ProRes 4444 with all the processing power that this new model is supposed to have. That would save people the additional step in post of batch converting the ProRes RAW to ProRes 4444 so that they can edit/color in Davinci Resolve, seeing as BMD/Atomos/Apple seem to be unable to resolve (see what I did there) their differences and allow Davinci to be able work with ProRes RAW files.

I'm assuming that RAW to ProRes 4444 should be less processing power than the new H265 recording additions.

IIRC, the Shogun Inferno went from $2000 to around $900 in two years or so. All of their recorders receive discounts at some point. This one is instantly a much more attractive product if you're considering the original right now.

I know it is not a popular size but I would love to see one of these in a 10" or 12" size with a 1000 nit rating. 5" or 7" is not that useful for real monitoring outside of confirmation and general use imho. Since live streaming and switching has come more into my world, I would need to be able to run a small switch and record the output which requires more screen real estate for me to be happy. There is definitely a limited TAM for these products. So the price drops do not surprise me as more internal recording gets better and better.

And, right on schedule, R5c rumors indeed pop up. According to CR, the camera should be released somewhere in the spring of 2022.

PS. I think I deleted the wrong post. Oh, well.

Does anyone know if you can record S&Q on the Ninja V? So, let's say you are outputting 4K60p from camera -- can you record it in a 23.98 timebase on the Ninja V?

Not sure about the V but don't think so.

Take a look at the video below and how it's done with the FS5 and RAW via SDI and some Shogun menu settings.

[In the video, they use 60p as the base so it's 4K 120fps over (/ = overcranking) 60p so the slow-motion would be in a 60p file on the recorder but it's the same idea.]
