Am I right in assuming the Ninja captures any HDMI signal plugged into it?
Sorry if my question is a ''newbie'' but I am just trying to learn.
Why would I record to this device rather than my camera's sd card?
thanks.

What kind of camera do you have?

I assume your camera is recording in a highly compressed format (I assume it is AVCHD, which is a very compressed format). Ninja allows you to record in a much more, lets say, robust format. When you compress data you eventually loose some information which could be used later in post-production (VFX or Colour grading).

As Vik mentioned, it would help to know what camera you have to know all the benefits of using an external recorder like the Ninja.

As he mentioned, you are likely to get a more robust robust format

there are some other advantages as well
- Ninja 2 has tools to help with exposure that your camera may not have (e.g., zebras)
- Some cameras will allow you to record to both the Ninja and the internal SD card at the same time, giving you redundancy.

there are other advantages as well but this should give you some flavor for it

And there are disadvantages too
- a rig with an external recorder is not as compact nor as self contained as simply recording internally.

Hope this makes sense

I'd do a lot of research first - many, many testers are finding little to no difference (even negative difference in noise structure) compared to AVCHD video cameras.

That said, DSLR uses with clean HDMI out seem happy with it. But get the Ninja 2, which has automatic pulldown and saves a step in post.
