At what point can I delete my CONTENTS folder

Hey guys,
I don't want to kill my contents folder too early, but my external hard drive is about to be maxed out (I have 6 gigs remaining). I have all the footage logged and transferred in FCP- can I delete the original contents folder off my external hard drive now?
I am a bit concerned about how much space I am taking up anyway- I mean I have an 80 gig hard drive that is just bout maxed out with 3 P2 card transferred and then logged and transferred into FCP- is that right? Should it be using that much space?

up to you- for me the answer is never. If anything ever needs to be redone or exchanged with a nonFCP system you'll be out of luck. I'd suggest investing in more hard drives- they are so cheap compared to what is often a priceless shot.

When working with hd, the file sizes will be big, that's just how it is.

Go get a 1tb usb 2 drive to archive all your P2 content, they cost around $200 and it will be plenty of space for a while.

I never get rid of anything, I just buy more hard drives. They are so cheap now, there's no reason not to.
 
I agree with Noah, never delete the originals. In fact, I'd go a step further and recommend that you look into getting rid of the whole Log & Transfer step entirely, and instead use one of the many tools out there like Raylight, HD Log, or MXF4QT. That way you could be working on the original MXF files, cutting your hard drive space in half. Or, for safety/redundancy purposes you could still duplicate your files, but instead of converting them to a proprietary quicktime format you could leave them in MXF format which gives you interchangeability and cross-platform compatibility with non-FCP systems.
 
another vote with noah. i have all the p2 cards ive ever shot saved in their original p2 card structure in the respective client folders.

you dont delete your tapes do you? why delete your source p2 content?
