GH5 At B&H and Amazon, the GH5 and GH5M2 are the same price

I noticed that at both B&H and Amazon, the GH5 and GH5M2 are either the same price (body only) or very close to each other. In fact, on B&H, the GH5M2 with the 12-60mm f2.8-4 lens is $100 *less* than the GH5 with the same lens. I have a GH5 and have really enjoyed it over the years -- plus I have a GH6 and like it as well. Therefore, I'm not in the market for a camera. However, is there any reason to choose a GH5 instead of a GH5M2? Any thoughts on why Panasonic would appear to be blowing out the GH5M2 and not the GH5?

In my experience, Amazon's usually late to adjusting their prices and/or usually plays by their own rules.

At B&H, the GH5 body is discontinued (at this second, but sometimes they buy others' stock and it reappears again). But at some point both GH5 I/II were marked down to a certain price and then those savings also get commonly applied to the kits which made them pretty close in price.

Nevertheless they are probably trying to clear as much inventory as possible as these cameras won't sell much anymore at this point (happens to every company).
 
Funny... I swear B&H's results page for "panasonic gh5" looks different now than it did earlier today. I am sure there was a listing for the GH5 without a lens for $1297, which was the same price for the GH5M2. Then the lens added to the GH5M2 was $1697 and the lens added to the GH5 was $1797. I should have done a screen shot!
 
You're not crazy, happens all the time...AI appears to be working the pages (like with Amazon which is constantly changing, but B&H's is less active).

I just don't get why the GH5M2 is less expensive than the older GH5. If I had a choice, I'd take the M2 version.
 
Maybe because if it's an automatic calculation/reduction based on the automatic system only looking at sales numbers. Presumably the GH5 I sold a lot more than II, and it's only dropping the price to what it think it should be which happens to anomalously work out to be $100 more.

That's the only reasoning I can think of because it apparently doesn't understand features and that it's a new, better model.

Was the GH5 I more expensive than II at their launch times? I don't remember but if so then that probably has something to do with it as well (and part of the automation).
 
With the GH-6 being heavily discounted, there's a lot of pressure to clear the inventory of GH5's of all production runs first.

This does happen often in retail. A friend of mine bought Model 3 Performance for ~ $63,000 last year.
 
Camera Conspiracies saw this coming and sold his GH6 after the release of the S5II with phase detect. I know most people have short term memories but anyone remember when Panasonic said they didn't put PD in the GH6 because it hurt image quality? While they were saying contrast detect was better they were secretly developing PD for the S5II. The way these companies lie with a straight face is funny.
 
That's why I would get extremely frustrated at people blindly defending their reasoning.

It's okay to defend the reasoning if one really wants to believe it, but understand people lie.

And sometimes there's nothing wrong with lying, just saying.
 
Panasonic lied about the "image quality" too. The lack of the Phase Detect on their cameras was their deal with Sony, who provided the sensors. The same sensors had Contrast Detect disabled on Nikon cameras. Sony, being the sensor manufacturer had both PD and CD enabled. So, it was all a cartel BS.
