In Windows Explorer:

1. Tools
2. Folder Options
3 File Types
4. either find (or add as new) Extensions, "MXF"
5. If it does not already indicate Windows Media Player click change and select it.
6. Done

P.S. You will probably need to have the P2 driver installed (not certain of that--but I do).

"opens with" sounds like part of a message you get in a box when Windows does not know what to do with a file. Have you (1) got your P2 drivers installed, then (2) performed the procedure above? My PC's are all XP Pro machines -- if you have a different operating system you may have different result but the procedure to assign file extensions has been pretty much the same since Windows 2K

You can't just play mxf files using media player. They arent like avi files. You can use the P2 viewer that came with your camera. You will need an NLE that either has P2 support or can ingest mxf footage. Or you need an intermediate solution like Raylight or Cineform.

Arson- Your statement is patently incorrect. MXF files will and do play on any PC with Windows Media Player. I outlined the process for the poster though perhaps I or he missed one of the steps inadvertantly. This was previously discussed (somewhere) here in the past . . . I do it all the time as do others. Don't want to start an argument but it's unclear to me why you would even make that statement. I've tried (and somehow failed) to assist the poster so I'll just bow out. Perhaps someone else can rectify the problem--failing that, as you suggested, the P2 Viewer is an option.

The MXF files can be played by Windows Media Player if you have the P2 Viewer installed. But in my experience they play "squished"; WMP doesn't know how to take the aspect ratio into account. So it's better to play 'em in P2 Viewer anyway.

i was able to associate it in xp my desktop by first uninstalling the p2 drivers then reinstalling after it is associated. there was no problem in my laptop. problem is, if i double click the file from explorer, media player says file not found. but if i open and play from media player, it works. i use media player when i'm only viewing coz registering vp2 cards is a hassle in our workflow, we keep each keep p2 and vp2 cards 1:1, p2 registration a bit cumbersome. anyway my video card scales the clip to full screen on my hd monitor.
