Aspect Ratio Question

Is there anyway to get an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, like in HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGER or GARDEN STATE, without a specialty lens. I have a DVX-100A and I love the really wide scope aspect ratio. Also, I edit with VEGAS 5.0.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Checkout the sticky above (4:3 to 16:9) then just mask the results to 2.35:1 using a matte. That's what Distjecta does anyway, and it looks great.

that's what anamorphic lenses are for. But I'm told the one for the DVX isn't very good.

very few projects are really anamorphic material though. most are best suited for 16 x9 in my opinion.

Unless it is letterbox.... 2.35 aspect ratio went out in the late 70's. Today it is a 2.39/2.40 aspect ratio depending on your rounding. You will get more active picture pixels by cropping out 2.40 from a 16:9 full height anamorphic image than from a 4:3 image.

Yep that it what they are for. As for the quality, looking at the samples on Barry's DVD the quality is great! And the resolution is better then upressing and croping as your using the entire 4:3 image. But it is not an easy lens to use. Barry describes how to use it in his book, and it requires careful set up and exposure, which can make it difficult to use, especially on run and gun type work. So it seems like it is a good lens as long as you're willing to put up with the time consuming setup and prep work. I'd rather just uprez the 4:3 image ...
