Aspect Conv

Just got my hands on the DVX 100 BEN, nice camera. Hoping to shoot widescreen 16x9. Does the camera shoot this? I found the aspect conv in camera set up and you can switch it to letterbox but is this true 16x9??

No. Letterbox isn't 16:9 at all; it just has black bars painted on.

Choose Squeeze. It's an electronic 16:9 (the chips are 4:3), but it does everything 16:9 is supposed to.

either 4:3 or squeeze. If you ever want to colour correct with the letterbox then you have to letterbox it again. I shoot squeeze.

Thanks guys, just had a look at squeeze, looks very strange in the LCD. whats the advantages of using this over 4:3??

It's 16:9. If you're intending your footage to end up on a widescreen DVD or a widescreen TV, squeeze is widescreen footage. 4:3 isn't.

The DVX100B has the option to show a correct 16x9 image on the LCD display whilst filming in squeeze mode. You need to go into the display setup menu and change the display aspect to either auto or 16:9 this will give you the black bars in the display during filming in squeeze and show it unsqueezed!

I know you can see the black bars in the lcd but when i shoot squeeze and digitize it here are no black bars?? How come??

Because the only reason you need black bars is when you're trying to fit the 16:9 image into a 4:3 frame and don't want the image stretched. With Squeeze, you aren't doing that.

This is what you want.

Yeah, black bars means that you have a 4:3 image and the top and bottom are being cut off to make it 16:9. With squeeze mode the image itself is 16:9.

If you're going to shoot with a DVX100a in "squeeze" mode, I'd recommend getting a Century Optics 16:9 eyepiece adapter so you can see a non-squeezed image in the VF. It adds a bit of weight and moves the camera farther from your face --- making it more difficult to handhold, though. I generally use a SteadyStick when shooting handheld unless it's just some quick b-roll.

Hey Barry,

Don't you say in your DVX book that for a filmout or uprezzing to HD, letterbox is better than squeeze?
Could you please explain that a little more, it gets quite confusing...
