As Promised, My First Commercial on the 7D

I recently directed a commercial for a skin product company shooting on the 7d. it was a blast as we shot at an airport with a hot model, a ferrari and a leer jet. good times. I posted a few setup pics before and promised I'd post the finished product of a commercial I recently directed using the 7D. It's so exciting to actually be using this thing for gigs now. When taking the spot to various post houses, a lot of people thought it was the Red One or that it looked better. We had no problems pushing this hard in after effects, shake, etc for visual effects. I'm planning on using the 7D for more commercials in the future.

So here's the links:
i really hate vimeo (it skips and stutters constantly) so i suggest viewing on our site, www.houseblendmedia.com and just click on the top of the page where it says "Velashape Commercial"

but if you have computer issues and need vimeo its there too

enjoy.

haha...yea, well, what are you gonna do...client wanted us to sell "sexy" and "curves" for a brand that is dedicated to getting rid of cellulite, etc...
the concept was definitely not ours. it was straight from the client with little wiggle room, but given the product (an anti cellulite cream) i was happy with what we came up with

Wow her skin looked so amazing! I guess her being a model helped but that video really shows what the 7D is capable of.

no problem.
it was a cool set up actually.
we rented the cinemabundle by redrock with follow focus, rails, matte box, etc. it was great and gave the impression to the client that we were shooting on the red or a small arricam. it really made the camera look professional and "big"....
We used the ezjib with an 8 foot arm for the jib shots (that was not one of the better parts of the shoot actually-- we didnt have proper weights and it made operating the jib really tough)

i rented a ton of lenses but ended up using mostly my 50mm 1.4 canon efs as well as the 24mm L series 1.4 (I LOVE THAT LENS). never used a zoom once. we used pro mist filters, nd filters and polarizes to keep the lens wide open and shutter speed slow to avoid problems.

lights wise, we rented a 2k HMI ARI and a 1.2k HMI. we had 8 foot light grid and 8 foot super bounce and 2 frames plus some bounce board etc...that was the majority of the light used. the gaffer was hitting her hard with little diffusion with the hmi's and it loooked great for what we were going for.

really the only problems we had all day was with with the jib. i think the 7d being so light made it especially difficult to balance. we needed lighter weights for more exact balancing.

Well I really love compressed depth of field so my sweet spot might be a little different but i think the 1.8-2.8 range is great if you're shooting relatively static stuff. i love the look at 1.4 but even the slightest movement usually throws focus out.

F*&K yeah!

I just want to thank you... This is incredibly inspiring for someone like me who is used to shooting on the HVX and EX1, BUT actually bought the 7D. I do mostly commercial work, and its really encouraging to know that primes + pro rig + 7D can get this type of results.

would you buy the red rock micro gear IF you were planning to do 2 projects per month like this? or would you rent?

nice! so glad you liked it.
i was equally inspired by the fact that ive now been hired for 3 legit gigs in tv and commercial that all asked me to shoot 7D.
its amazing how fast this thing is being accepted by the industry.

the cinema bundle is friggin expensive! i am actually looking into the ispy (spl?) which i think is around 1500 dollars and gives the same stability. If I can rent it out 5-6 times this year its paid for.

the two big toys on my wishlist are the merlin and the glidetrack

Blown away by your work, man!

BTW
I've got a Redrock microFollowFocus (version 1) and Redrock matte box I'm trying to sell. If you're interested, feel free to PM for details or an offer. I was going to be putting them up on ebay next week.
