Artifacts in my clips!

I had a few problems with these color squares showing up in my test clips but I though it was cause I was dumping into a 4200rpm laptop HDD... I just found an other one of these in clips I dumped into a RAID1 7200 rpm HDD... it isn't a great product, it is a 1TB WD myBook

I wonder if it is either my Laptop (2.2GHx Turion, 1GB of memory, HP dv8130us), or maybe it is because I was using the USB connection until I get a 4 to 6 pin Firewire 400. Then again I didn't touch the Laptop while it was copying. I tested the external with HD Tach and in RAID1 I got only 36MB/s, however speed should not be an indicator of corruption when dumping.

I just put in an order for a Thecus eSATA/USB enclosure and two Seagate 7200.10 320GB drives... but I am not sure where the problem is coming from... I shoot in a week! PLEASE HELP!

thanks, but I didn't plan for it so I can't take the credit, lol

yes, it is an import issue for sure, I previewed the test shots on a 1:1 monitor before dumping... I can't re-import, it was formatted and though it doesn't matter for these clips it most definitely would ruin my day/week if it happened while in production...

what could this be? Is the new external likely to fix this?
has this happened to you? anyone?

Your girlfriend has a terrible case of "The Glitch". Get her to the emergency room immediately:( just kidding!
But this is the dreaded glitch with P2 footage and this again proves that, while more prevelent on a mac, it is not limited to the mac. The source of the problem has yet to be identified but it only seems to happen to a small percentage of footage shot. So far the only way to avoid it is to make sure you write protect the cards prior to inserting into a laptop.

Which begs the question (for USLatinContent): was the card write-protected?

And another: has anyone, ever, experienced the dreaded glitches when transferring from P2 cards that *were* write-protected?

No the card has never been write protected... ever (yet)

I will from now switch the protection on before inserting into my laptop...

If I do get artifact I will post to trouble-shoot further... but to maximize our community effort,
this thread has now been moved to Barry's thread called
"Let's solve this glitch once and for all"

well, I just came from a 14 hour shoot day with a huge crew and EVERY clip has these artifacts, around 200 - all of them. I still don't know how to keep this from happening again. Also, any way to fix the corrupt files? All footage was deleted from p2 cards.
thanks

But just so you know... it seems that yes, there is, if you are in the PC world anyway... it sounds like Apple had a bit more serious problems.

It's a horrible bummer for anyone who's experienced it for sure, but at least (so far) the cure (write-protect before dumping) appears to be in hand. I deeply sympathize with those who've been stung by this particularly nasty bug.

I agree... I was lucky enough to notice my first corruption like 4-5 days before production... I am extremely thankful to those who figured it out.

VScomm already posted on Barry's thread though and that is where all the knowledge is compiled so we should let this thread die out.
