ART USB Dual portable preamp as alternative to Beachtek/Juicedlink

In the camera the digital gain was set to 17db and the analogs were at 12db. agc was off.

digital gain = 0
analog = 0
agc = off

try that. Should be WAY less hiss. Actually, there should be about 0 hiss depending on your mic.

My only problem was that I don't have the adapter to monitor audio out of the camera and when the digital gain was at 0 I was unable to get anything above about. -40dB it seemed. I used the device over the weekend recording a lav and a boom into my zoom h1 with stellar results.

Can anyone comment on the noise that this reviewer (http://vimeo.com/2451806, starting at about 6:10) experienced when touching the external casing? Have any of you experienced that same noise. I would think that it would make it close to unusable if you intend to be able to make any adjustments or ride the gain while recording. Nandreetta had mentioned it in the beginning of this thread and I had the same exact concern when I first checked out this link from the cheesycam comments. Thanks in advance.

I've actually used the ART tube preamp for a while, it's a pretty decent device but you have to be really careful about feeding it a really hot signal - the distortion is really weird sounding and while it does have a vacuum tube I think they went really cheap on the actual A/D converters. Not sure if this tiny version shares the same components (minus the tube), but it's something to consider.
