Arri's New Camera

I didn't get to take pictures when I visited the set (if I had, undoubtedly I would have been roasted alive in the depths of the Slor), but I went back later to get these location pix. '84.

That's awesome. They made such good use of locations in that movie. The director was either a certified genius or an authentic wacko.

Laszlo Kovacs really unlocked the funny with his shooting. 2 of my favorite shots were:

We were destined to get thrown out of this dump

Everybody has 3 mortgages nowadays

Just the right shot choices, y'know?

Eric - indeed câmera tests are not usually fine art - but the final step of a test is to try and salvage the footage In post by doing things like pulling up underexposed faces not leaving them under

As the files are swung typically the file on the poorer camera breaks
Here, now you've got your shadow recovery in post starting at 7:37.

Yep its a bit better - honestly I cant see any difference between cameras - which may be the case. (I can see that the exposure at 3200 is more on the P6k) Obviously they need to zoom in to 400% to beat the youtube compression.

In those films I cant see anything in those films that would make me want either camera.

Personally If I were looking for noise Id shoot a grey card, at level a on the scopes and then put is at level b in post, such a test would be consistent and repeatable.

Edit..
I think this chap does a reasonable job of looking at a file. He has of course done a major blooper during the filming as the test chart and his skin are on the same x axis during the shot, making examination of the scopes challenging. Also his file has no highlight to blow or real shadow to crush.

By doing three brackets on two cameras you would have six files to match which is a right pain. Only at that point would you be in a position to decide which is cleaner.

Besides the image quality, it's a really fun camera to use.

Since the BMCC, I have always loved and treasured good touchscreens. With this one, it's just so easy to change any settings. By the time you've pressed a few buttons on the ARRI's viewfinder or body, you could have changed your resolution, framerate, WB, shutter speed, and which card you'd like to use in the BM.

Just little things like that make cameras worth it for some people even when they don't exactly meet all of our other expectations at all times.

But no matter how many videos are on YouTube proving or not proving their similarities and differences, it's truly moot because less than 1% of people are purchasing Alexa Minis. Even used Classics and similar flavors are piling up on eBay.

I find touch screens intuitive, but ultimately slower in real world use. As a pro shooter, I find touch screens annoying. this goes for Red and BM. Short learning curve is good for amateurs, but eventually we want performance. like using hot keys in Davinci. The whole BM touch screen thing is over blown and only applies to users who are new to cameras. Because in all honesty, hot keys have always been faster, in programs and a cameras for decades.

it is like "FINALLLY!" I can't believe the f'ing Alexa has held the specs game for so long. Design and character is one thing, but specs is another. So glad we are starting to get past this decade long bench mark in image quality...... oh wait, we're still not there yet. fudge.

EDIT: btw, seeing those Ghost Busters shots, 35mm film still looks good.

lol.

There is absolutely no way on God's green earth you're switching your camera settings faster than I am with the Pocket 6K.

You can prefer buttons. Buttons are great.

But saying BM's touchscreens are overblown or only apply to users who are new to cameras is simple-minded and ignorant.

Over blown for pro or power users? yes, 10000%.

touch screen is great for beginners and more casual shooting. Like a big VFX Hollywood shoot or a beginner, or a small studio. anything do with having the time to stand there looking at the screen. But run n gun eng Docu verite? hot keys.

if anyone ever played the video game counter strike, they may have an idea what I am talking about. B43. Or use a touch screen? B43 is faster every time. PaulF, look at me, not using car metaphors, but also kind of the same thing.

If they work for you then that's all that matters.

I only pointed out that the camera was fun to use because of its touchscreen and per usual you picked something out of the post and created it into an argument about why the screens are overblown and who they are for, and that buttons are better.

FWIW, the P6K has buttons too. You can use them and the dial to change a lot of the settings. Including pre-programmed on/off features like zebras, peaking, LUT display, etc.

Correct.

I have no issues with BM's buttons. Just that a lot of people go around praising the intuitiveness of the touch screen, but that is only for new users and those that have the extra milliseconds. Red has the same issue as BM, and they both rely on touch screen a little too much. Canon stills division is one of the better at giving immediate control. I've been able to change settings while whip panning using canon Cameras and vintage manual lenses.

I don't think I ever said that touch screens we're bad, and I certainly said how they were good. I just meant that "intuitive' is no substitute for speed. Not fast or quick, as touch screens tend to be relatively fast, but in talking about those milliseconds. that is where hot keys come into play.

Also, Norbro, looks like your Reddit crew is out and down voting again. This is not reddit, there is absolutely no advantage to down voting or upvoting. The best part of DVX is everyone has an equal voice. Just say what you think is the best part of DVX. brand new members and veterans have the same stage. yet voting changes nothing.

Plus, if menu design and interface were a primary concern for camera buyers, Sony would be out of business

likely, haha.

Menus can be set up. most important is having the controls when it matters. And I have never been disappointed by Sony in the ENG days. I feel in the DSLR/mirrorless, I prefer Canon so far, but most have options that suffice.

I'm not on Reddit.

But maybe others are frustrated with your comments because I don't think you even realize what you're saying.

BM's touchscreens are very intuitive. Besides their responsiveness, no one else has the same layout and design. There are similarities like with RED's upper and lower status rows, but they aren't as nice as BM's, IMO.

All you had to say was I like buttons better and work faster with them without the other stuff.

There is no universal problem with Sony's menu design and interface; it's only a problem if someone makes it a personal problem.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned they were intuitive. My posts are still on this same page. And I have also said that touch screens are fast. just not as fast as dedicated hot keys. This is not a source of contention in video games or editing. Why are camera people supposed to be different?

I am unclear why you disagree? I am not disagreeing with touch screen users, I am just saying that is isn't the bench mark for pro camera operators in ENG, Doc, or Verite settings where split second operator decisions matter.

If the BM Pocket camera is on your shoulder with the touch screen behind your head how can you quickly and accurately access the touch screen if is it next to or behind your head (probably way behind if balancing a 17-120 cine zoom)? I can access all the primary cameras controls with buttons on my Amira without taking it off my shoulder. Due to the shape and size of the Amira it also means the buttons a camera don’t have to be way behind my head.
