ARRI SXT, new Alexa XT at 4K

I think the problem now is lenses being good enough for 4K and 8K, and storage, and whatnot. I mean lenses now you can't really have them wide open on F1.4 or 2 if you want the resolution to be good. Maybe that's is less of problem on bigger sensors closer to 65mm...
Well, Canon seems to be happy with their lens lineup for the 5Ds/5Dr, which are 50 MPX cameras and, off tests, there's some, albeit marginal, improvement over the 36 MPX Nikon D810. Pentax has a much lauded 645Z MF camera with 50 MPX, so everything is moving toward that 8K (33 MPX) mark.

Ikegami will be showing an 8K camera at the NAB. Within a couple of years, 8K should become high end pro accessible. On the consumer front, owners of high end front projectors will be interested. Anyone else probably won't.

To read this kind of posts against RU where the forums were born by the same founder and President of associated cinema camera project is beyond any good sense of accurate perspective on balanced facts as much as same family members or close relatives (or not so close) hating each other... for no sense or pure trivia with no exact clue why :-)

It's pretty sad. I loved DVXuser for so long, but it feels like I got excommunicated from here when I went RED.

The current and continuous pixel race is toward 8K. 4K is merely a pit stop.

I get a kick out of comments like this and comments saying 4K is here. There is no 4K broadcast, no 4K blu-ray out, movies are still mainly finished in 2K and everybody delivers in HD. But 4K is already passe and here comes 8K. LOL. I think this is wishful thinking from people heavily invested in 4K gear or who jumped in the band wagon way too early in the Red One days.

Well, 4K TV's have been here for a couple of, as has 4K streaming. 4K Blu-Ray will be out by Christmas and the OTA will have to pass major political hurdles before being deemed practical.

But, as George and Ira wrote, "The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know may just be passing fancies, and in time may go".

Exactly. I said something positive about the REDforum...in the same statement with something positive about this forum. It immediately got bad votes from members and hidden. To me, this really shows the state of things. Very sad...and not on par at all with true professionalism.

Anyways, pixels are important for VFX-plates, but if going for 2K then who cares...

If a lens is good for stills which are higher than 4k it is good enough for 4k video. It is true that lenses are softer when wider open but as the current lens options stand right now they are considered very good for high resolution stills which people are able to scrutinize over a heck of a lot more than a movie.

I'm talking about the leap over to 8K, not just 4K.

I think even the top brands like Zeiss and Cooke, struggles wide open on 4K, that they need to be down at F2.8 in order to be "great". Still lenses don't have to worry about things like "breathing" to the same degree as cinema lenses do. But, if we get bigger sensors, then shooting more stopped down will give the same effect...

I think 8k will be a challenge for sensor manufacturers, at least until more sophisticated sensor tech becomes viable for video cameras, or everyone moves onto legit Vista Vision/70mm full time. 4K acquisition is fully on the way though, there's no reason to deny it. Even if you just take the footage, correct exposure, and then downsample into 2k, you'll be getting super workable images for delivery and more options and headroom. Same as shooting in 12 bit for 8 bit delivery.

So, now Amira claims the same 4K recording. Old Amiras need to have their sensors "recalibrated", whatever that means.
