ARRI Launches ALEXA Mini LF

Yeah, this looks pretty sweet. It's way out my price range but I could see renting one for the right project. There will probably be a bunch of great deals on Minis and Amiras soon.

A friend of mine at one of the production companies I shoot for sent me that a little while ago. Said they’re supposed to meet with Arri at NAB. I wonder if they’ll have a new toy to play with, soon... They already have three Amira’s.

And... Built in ND. 2, 4 and 6 stops...

Sweet! Smart move Arri. Interesting how this camera mainly exists because of Netflix delivery requirements although the other OTTs will probably follow suit.

This is one of the few demos where they completely push the camera to the edge of exposure. Pretty rare demo promo.

They slam the highlights pretty hard, and aren’t always giving the face the cleaner side of exposure.

This sounds like a completely new sensor. Will be interesting to see if it can out perform the current dynamic range of their current sensor tech.

Not really, same imager as the Arri ALEXA LF. It's made of two of the older imagers vertically side by side.

I was referencing the 4K s35 sensor yet to be released that Teddy_Dem mentioned:

On page 5 of the article below, their managing director states that they are also working on a Super35 4K camera that will be released in the first half of 2020:

I think I might want this camera to go with my three Arri Amiras.

My biggest question; will there be an LPL to EF adapter? I didn't see one mentioned. I imagine a third party one would at least be made, but nice if Arri had one from the get-go.

I heard that the licenses for anamorphic and ArriRAW are included, so this would make it pretty close in price to the original Mini. Can anyone confirm?

I love the new viewfinder and LCD. The Amira viewfinder is of mediocre quality and the flip out LCD is too small and low quality to use for anything other than reference or the menu system. I typically use a SmallHD 702 with my Amira, while with my C300 Mark II's and their 4" LCD (same size as the new Amira LCD) I rarely feel the need for an additional on-camera monitor.

Newsshooter mentioned Super35 as a firmware update, which would make it more viable for working with other lenses.

Built-in mic is nice.

I imagine this will become the go-to camera for high end production, particularly if they can make it compatible with non-full frame lenses, at which point, the only downsides would be slightly higher power draw and negligible additional weight.

I wonder if it can do true 4K in super35 mode.

Arris usual videos are class. This is not.

That homeless guy in the yellow hat annoys me.

THe highlights are gone in a bad way.. in a studio lit environment.. crap DP or crap camera?

I love the focus drop 0.51 right across her great expression . LF DOF perfection!

I bet its a good camera of course :)

You have to like how in their demo the "DP" (wait, actor/model with a camera or DP?) does a shot which looks like it'd be a rickety handheld shot, then it cuts to a totally different camera movement like from a gimbal or something. Or with the Steadicam/gimbal push-in BTS, then it cuts to a side to side gimbal arc shot. So, it never really shows us the shots that the people are "pretending" to film. Well, at least it's not a demo for camera movement tools.

Used to oggle over the images produced by Alexa. No doubt this camera is great, but the IQ and features aren't so far away anymore from what's available for a fraction of the cost. Workflow, reliability, overall features, IQ are all still class leading, but the diminishing returns are ever present.

Not a diss, just processing / realizing out loud that I have substantially less FOMO than ever before when seeing a $60,000 camera like this.

With Arri it’s more about how it fits into the commercial film production eco system as a whole. All other cameras do not slot into the existing workflows and systems in the same way. Hence this is why Arri is the industry standard. For another manufacturer to take that position will be very difficult.

Owner operator is a totally different market.

As an owner/operator I like Arri because it makes getting good images much easier. Sure, with proper post work, lighting, rigging, a bajillion dollars, blah, blah, blah, you can almost do the same with most cameras these days. But with Arri, you can give it to a 10 year old and they've got a shot at Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards. That same kid with a 5D won't even get hired to film his eight year old sister's birthday party.

It's not the skillset that matters, it's the equipment. ;)

Leave story to writers and producers.
