Argo

Ben Affleck's third directorial effort, and probably his best one yet. Just saw it this afternoon and really enjoyed it.

Trailer:

How is this the only discussion on this film? Saw it tonight and thought it was terrific. Incredibly suspenseful and even very funny at times. Even though I've liked Affleck's stuff so far, this still was one I enjoyed more than I thought I would.

Ahh, can't wait to see this, especially since it's a film about the film industry. May this be my reserved post for thoughts.

Argo is gripping. I think it's a terrific film, but it's not perfect. Things don't really pick up until the third act, but the third act is so good it kind of made me forget that I was a little bored during the middle of the second act. Overall though, I really liked it and think Affleck has really stepped into the director's boots well. He's a far better director than he ever was a movie star.

Good film. Liked seeing the old 70's Warner Brothers logo. Helped take me back in time. It has a really tense and suspenseful 1st and 3rd act, but the 2nd act does sag a bit. The opening scenes with the siege of the US embassy felt very authentic, with the feeling of chaos and impending doom being really palpable. Once it shifted gears into the 'fake movie' section that gritty tension dissipates, and the movie feels more conventional, but the Hollywood scenes are diverting enough. Great performances from the hostages. Alan Arkin of course steals all his scenes. Ben's performance was ok if a bit zombie-like at times. I think he had a contractual obligation to himself that he never smile in this movie or something. Anyway, I recommend it, although it's probably best to go in not knowing anything about this story. I already did, and the trailer spoiled most of the funnier moments. Probably would have enjoyed it even more if I hadn't.

Really enjoyed this film. I didn't feel it was too slow in the second act. Lingering in my mind was 'he still has to get them out', and that kept me on my seat.

Third act was wonderful. Mind you the writing was a bit transparent, with these 'conflicts' happening as an obvious ploy to build tension. However it wasn't enough to pull me out of it.

I saw it last night, and thought it was great. It made my girlfriend cry, for some reason, but she didn't know the story at all and was desperately afraid they would get caught.

Loved it. Saw it opening night at midnight with only 2 others in the theater. Really glad this movie has found longevity just as Affleck knew it would need to succeed. Definitely a treat...can't wait to see what Affleck does next.

What a great film. Seriously did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Might even check it out for a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet.

Another +1 for Argo.

On a side-note... I was just a kid in the 70's, but the older I get the more proud I am of my older brother's and the same style they had back then... which they're ashamed of now. That was an element that I especially enjoyed about this film... the period feel was very authentic, and rather then have even a single thought of "goofy hair-styles, glasses, etc"... I was completely wrapped up in the human drama. The casting/acting was really good across the board. It always surprises me when I see (what I guess) is a total unknown foreign actor nailing it. How about that guy (Iranian soldier)... it's a joke to say, but seriously, you know the one I mean...

I don't want to get all nationalistic, but being a Canadian, the film is a little to America F yeah, but even Tony Mendez has gone on record saying that Canada had a major roll in what happened. It was similar to watching Saving Private Ryan. Nope, no Canadians to be found in this war. Drunken patriotism aside, I ****ing love Affleck. Also for the record, we in Canada do not pronounce the second T in Toronto. In fact, most Canadians, especialliy in the Northern regions of Ontario, pronounce it more like, Charana. Im sorry. Way too much scotch. Way to much.

Saw it recently and Affleck with that black beard worked right into the character, without it he would've looked too much like the Affleck we all know.

Integration of the 70s riots was very well done and the suspense built well with the local kids putting together the shreded pictures of the 6 Embassy staff
who were missing from their lists. What could have balanced it better was more of the hardships of the other embassy captives
who remained there for some 400 days.

A 747 pilot buddy of mine loved the army chasing that Jumbo down the strip as it took off, didn't surprise him in the least.

The closing credits music was low level, almost apologetic. 8/10.

Cheers.

Tommy Lee Jones was not impressed.

I thought it was well-done, but I also think it was Affleck's third-best movie. He's got the chops, and this is a good movie, but his other efforts were better.

Except it never happened. Most of the events in the plot never happened. Argo recap.
