The actual figures in this poll can not really be considered accurate, as not everyone that owns an HVX is on this forum. I think the official word from Jan on camers returned with broken tabs is about 0.5%. However if the 25% in this poll with broken tabs would chime in with how their tabs were broken, it would be a useful thread.

With a large-enough sample, it would still be accurate unless all forum members received inferior plastic battery holders, and all non-forum members received cast-iron versions. The failure rate for forum members should be the same as for non-members.

I would like to know how people are breaking them, if they know.

Best,

Jan

My tabs are fine but I've been super careful not to ever transport the camera with the battery in it. I've heard that later HVX200's appear not to have the broken tab issue and am wondering when the new ones were implimented. I got my camera in May of last year.

not yet, but it seemd like it may be inevitable. I am thinking about the velcro solution to fill the gap. anyone else doing it?

Yes, I have and I would try Velcro (the loop side) on the BOTTOM first, and see if that works. If you want more hold, put Velcro on both the TOP and BOTTOM. PS Jan & Panasonic do NOT recommend this. Note its velcro, not the CPU, and the velcro is easily taken off. For my run and gun workflow where the camera is rarely on a tripod, I feel it works great. . . . .

I voted yes and they were broken from a droppage (about 4 ft) - camera landed on the battery and snapped all four off.

I don't think they would have broken otherwise.....

Jan, I'm in Europe and the camera has gone back to Panasonic for repair. Apparantly the parts are due in from Japan but I can't seem to get a timescale. Would you happen to know who I could contact on the EU side to get an idea?

Thanks in advance

Jeff Brown

I also already asked that question in the past from wich serial number on the improved battery plate has been installed. No answer yet (not even from Jan but than again she can not know everything else we have to call her the Panasonic God LOL).

The serial number with the new implementation is F6.

Hi Jeff,

I really don't theink it should take too long. Unfortunately I don't know anybody i the service channel over there.

HEY - VELCRO TEMPTED USERS !

It may ( or may not ) be significant, but having velcro stuck to the sides of
the battery chamber WILL INCREASE THE TEMPERATURE OF A WORKING BATTERY.

This could be good , if you live in Iceland ( or Yorkshire ! ) , but could be BAD for
those of you in warmer climates.

Bearing in mind Sony's recent thermal runaway Li Ion laptop battery dangers ,
I am now treating my ( not inconsiderable ) range of rechargeables with extra
care!

TO SUPPORT the battery from lateral movement, I would think that a couple of
smaller strips , say something like 10x5 mm , of firmer rubber/plastic stuck at
the rearmost edge of the battery chamber , would allow more airflow, and minimise
the risk of (unintensionally) thermally insulating the battery.

NO PART OF THE ABOVE POST HAS BEEN TESTED OR RESEARCHED.
THESE ARE NOT INSTRUCTIONS ! - Just an idea for disscussion.

Ruff !

Is that F6 and later, or only F6 series? For example, if my camera's serial number starts with G6, is that with the new tabs?

The letter indicates the month of manufacture, and the number the year. So F6 is June 2006, and G6 is July 2006. In other words, your camera has the new design.

Good comment. Less Velcro the better (if you do use it ) and use the LOOP side of the Velcro (for max airflow). My on-board batteries do not seem to get warm during usage (only charging - as with the LI-ON batteries that blow up).

Velcro appears to work well due to it grasping the ridges of the battery by the LOOPs of the Velcro. I suspect the tabs may even survive a small drop of the camera with the battery on board (but Ill let someone else test that one ! ) .

Mine were broken when the camera was dropped (from no more than 2 feet)

How are the new tabs different from the old tabs? Are they still plastic?

I also have to ask why these tabs are made of plastic in the first place. Could they not have been made from aluminum or stainless steel? Then nobody would have to worry about breaking the tabs.

The newer model cameras have an extra piece of plastic to keep the battery more secure. . .not sure when they started it though. . .
