Are video camera prices going to drop in April/May?

I heard from someone that video camera prices should drop dramatically around April/May as new products are rolled out before Christmas. Is this true and by how much do they usually drop in price?

Someone told me to expect a 30% drop!

Thanks..

If that person works at Best Buy and you are talking about consumer cameras, you are probably correct. Don't expect such price drops on professional gear.

Prices come down all the time, new models come out all the time. Rebates come and go. But April/May is a tad early for rolling out products for the Christmas season!

Should drop "dramatically?"

All of them?

Not certain how any body could know what product will drop how much by when.

Which cam are you looking at?

And remember that this forum discusses DVCProHD and the HVX200 which are not sold at BB.

Just what I heard. Prices are said to drop on the older models as newer models come out across the board with more features.

Many consumer models follow that pattern, but most professional models, such as the DVX100 and the HVX200 do not.

Again, this is the HVX200 forum; you seem to be interested in purchasing a DVX100.

I am under the impression that with the NAB2007 conference in Vegas next month we are likely to see a price drop as new products are introduced and retailers want to dispose of the older merchandise.

I am actually waiting on buying a HVX in lieu of this.

Out of curiosity, who are you asking about this? If you have a friend at B&H Photo then maybe there's something to this but if it's some dude at Best Buy who likely has no idea what Pro and Prosumer stuff is, you probably shouldn't pay attention.

Not gonna happen. NAB gives us an occasional glimpse into what'll be coming down the road, but any NAB introductions are usually months and months away from hitting store shelves.

Nobody knows what will or won't happen, but if you're a US or Aus buyer, the one thing you can pretty much guarantee yourself is that by waiting until NAB, you're making sure you won't be getting the free P2 card via rebate. That promotion is scheduled to end at the end of this month, a full two weeks before NAB hits.

Besides, most every NAB introduction has already been announced. Very few companies spring new surprises at NAB anymore, they all pretty much announce what they're going to be showing weeks or months in advance. We all know Panasonic's showing the HPX2000, HPX500, and HSC1U (or whatever that micro-cam is called); Sony has their pre-NAB press kit already on-line, JVC's not really in any position to announce/intro something new although they'll be exhibiting their HD200 & HD250, and Canon doesn't introduce new prosumer-priced camcorders at NAB (at least, historically they never have IINM). So if you're expecting something new to be announced and made available that'll shake up today's sub-$8,000 camcorder market, I suspect you'll be roundly disappointed.
