are there any reason NOT to buy a 5D?

So has Hunter given shake the shake vs twixtor and AE?

Time will tell whether Canon gets the 24p implementation right. I hope it's real 24p and not some twisted version.

My MKII arrives in a few hours get ready for a Nikon announcement, that would be my biggest reason not to buy if you don't need a camera today. All of the MKII's other issues that I'm aware of are workable for me. I hope it's warm in the hands like the D90, my central heating just died it's bloody freezing in here.

The wedding shooter with his 60 minutes of edited footage will go through hell.
Agreed. It really depends on what tools you use, what system you are working on, and the length of the clip. The time it takes to render can be 40 minutes or up to 30 hours. If you need a faster turnover and require high quality results it may not be so painless.

The GH-1 forum is far from depressing. It's simply people who love to beat dead horses to... well, death. Squig, I'm really glad that you're finally getting a camera. Your sporadic posts can then be aimed at something a bit more productive from here on out.

beating dead horses was exactly what came to mind when I posted that. It's a bit depressing for me the GH1 could easily have been so much more. But it will be sometime.

Yeah looking forward to some productivity and forum relevance and maybe even some filmmaking. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

woohoo I fixed the central heating....see I'm not just a pretty face :zombie_smiley: sometimes it pays to read the manual! I mean in relation to gear accumulation too, I scored a GH1 manual early on from Mr Bloom which helped a lot with the decision making process.....I didn't actually read it of-course.

Now the other issue is can I edit the footage on Mac Dual 2.5 G5 it's about 4 years old with 4 gigs of RAM and convert it to 24p on that computer? Because if I need to buy another Mac that $2700.00 just jumped to 5 grand. and I can't rock with that.

Unless I go with PC and learn vegas or hackintosh it.

You probably don't need a new computer. Editing is not a problem once you convert the MOV videos to an intermediate format. Most new computers can't edit the 5D videos without transcoding or creating a proxy.

Lots of threads about how to do that all over. The most you may have to spend is about $100 if you decide to use cineform.

what do you all think about all-handheld-fly-on-the-wall documentary stuff with 5DII?

can you focus easily enough? hold it steady easily enough?

any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

If you want to be superfly the GH1 is probably a better option. It's image quality isn't quite as good as the MKII but it's better suited to ninja shooting. Kholi has posted heaps of stuff comparing the two.

As posted by Illya Friedman:

FWIW, I just watched a bunch of hand held dailies from the GH1--- no mud. In fact, it looks fantastic. I think I've finally nailed the native ASA of the camera. I'll blog about it more later.

Thought I let you know down here squig.

ok ... steady as she goes ... don't be suckered ... your almost to the promise land. :undecided...
He can't break now....it's already on the way. I have a feeling once he gets the toy in his hands then there's no looking back.

Thanks.

Please do a time test of 30P to 24P including length of project, output resolution (hopefully we're talking full resolution, as that's the most efficient way to output even for lower resolutions.), and rendering time for project length. Be sure to include processing horsepower at your disposal, etc then report back.

Painless, efficient and simple are all subjective terms. Please make the facts known, we already know the opinions.

Just to give y'all an idea of conversion time on my machine. I have a quad 2.5 hackintosh I just bought for $780 (psystar). It crunched a 25 second 5D H.264 raw clip and converted it to 24P and Pro-Res using compressor with the best rate conversion setting (high quality motion compensation) in 26 minutes. I doubt the conversion to Pro-Res added much to the time but I'd have to do another test to be sure. Compressor uses optical flow just like Shake and results seem great.

Now all of this seems to be academic as the rumors are growing louder about 24P coming to the 5D natively so this all might just be a thing of the past - just like the workarounds to try and get so semblance of manual control on the 5D

Final Cut/Compressor Method (not a favorite, doesn't look good to me personally, too many artifacts but it's an option) - 25 Seconds clip @ 26 Minutes on a Quad Core (Q6600 is it?) wanna-be-Mac -- Evidence.

By the way, Compressor does use the same Optical Flow but doesn't do the same job. Try it out.

Thanks for testing that out.

At the worst visual conversion you're talking about one (1) hour per minute of 1080 x 1920 on a Quad Core System of what's probably C2D Architecture. Less you got a new Quad, which I'd suspect to perform a good two minutes better if you've QMastered and Doubled-up instances on cores.

I've been using compressor for several years now. But my approach is a little different and more complicated but it avoids artifacts. Basically I don't convert the final edited video as a whole. Rather I flatten any effects sequences, media manage the project, batch convert each final clip with compressor, reconnect the media in a 24P timeline and finally put it all back together. You're converting the same amount of material because the project is media-managed to only include the footage you need for the edit and by doing it this way it prevents any cross-contamination of one clip into the next. But this approach isn't perfect and can be a head-ache for a complicated edited piece like say a heavy effects based music video. For narrative work where most of your cuts are just that straight cuts it works well.

Not evidence just what I got to show. Don't hate the messenger - that's why I've got.

ANd no joke it really is a mac. I've been really surprised with how good the machine runs. And I was able to connect an ATA DVD burner from an old machine and use a PCI-X RAID card as well because PC motherboards maintain the older connections that Apple always decides to drop. The Psystar is right there with our Quad 2.6 Mac Pro speed wise and it cost as much as a mac mini. It's not my fault Apple refuses to make a smaller desktop and leaves everyone stranded with the imac or shelling out $2600 for the Pro.

I have been looking at a Pystar system for a while but I was worried about support and If you could even run FCP2, motion, compressor, etc. on it. hmmm may think about that. way cheaper than $2600.00.

I'm there baby......it's been sitting next to me in the box for 2 hours while I try to get onto the landlord to get the central heating working! now I have to go buy an electric heater so we don't freeze to death tonight. where's the D90 heater when you need it.

Now I'm kind of hijacking this thread but after this I'll refrain from adding anymore to this off topic item. I also was a big skeptic but I took a chance (kind of like deciding to buy the 5DMKII way back in December to shoot video.)

Support - well we'll see how long they last. They're in Chapter 7 right now and Apple is also trying to crush them. The final clincher for me was the restore disc they've come up with. Long after Psystar is gone and Apple is actively trying to brick every hackintosh out there with the restore disc you can always re-load the EFI that makes the computer act like a mac and then re-install Leopard. Future OSX are an unknown but I can live with it for now because I now have the assurance that I can always go back to the original fully working installation. Besides it can work just fine as a PC at some point down the road.

It's kind of sad that it's come to this. I'm the biggest Apple fan but Apple continues to ignore this market. I simply had no use for an Imac. And the Psystar was brand new and still far cheaper than even used Mac Pros. Even an old 2.5 Quad G5 was going for around $1100 and that had all of the liquid cooled issues plus being locked into the Power PC past. The components on the Psystar are quality with a Gigabyte motherboard and Intel processors (Q8300) 1.33ghz FSB with 4GB 800mhz RAM & EVGA Nvidia 9400GT. The surprise for me was being able to use my ATA DVD burner and PCI-X raid card. I hadn't even considered that until I opened the case and realized it had PCI express and regular PCI and then saw that good old IDE/ATA port. Even if I bought the best Mac Pro that wouldn't be an option. So nice bonus there. I also bought a mac firewire 400/800 PCI express card for OWC and that also worked flawlessly.

It absolutely runs FCS2 with no problems. I can edit and playback raw h.264 5D clips right on the timeline (no RT effects - even cross-dissolves need rendered.) The 9400GT isn't the fastest card but the only upgrade they had was the 9500GT - so I figured it made sense to stay stock and then just buy the top end ATI Radeon HD 4870 to really tear it up. Psystar's upgrade advice was, "your psystar is a mac. If the video card is PCI express and runs on a mac it will work just fine in the psystar."

The Psystar certainly blows the doors off a Mac mini and easily out-renders and compresses any of the dual processor Imacs because it has 4 cores instead of just 2. It's not my main system but my home system so I was more willing to just take a shot. So far it's a slam-dunk price for performance. Running the free 32bit Geekbench gives me a score of 5365. That puts it right below the Early 2008 2.8 Quad Mac Pro! Not to shabby for $780 shipped. http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/

J I have a quad 2.5 hackintosh I just bought for $780 (psystar).

So after seeing this in your post ( never heard of this hackintosh machine prior ) I went and checked this out. OMG, it's so friggin awesome; and the power you get for a fraction of the price. How bitchin. When I upgrade my MAC's later this year, I am for sure seriously considering these systems. My 3D apps and AE should run sweet....

Thanks for the indirect enlightenment............. :-)
