Are cheaper LCD monitors really usable?

Hi,

I've seen a number of threads recommending inexpensive low-rez LCD monitors like the Lilliput typically providing resolutions of 800x480.

What I don't get is how one can successfully focus on a resolution that is around half HD (assuming you're shooting for full HD). I work in post, so I'm aware of subpixel sampling, aliasing etc etc, and I know the human eye can pick these up, but can one truly focus "pixel perfect HD" on these?

Given that these monitors don't really have many more pixels than the LCDs on the cameras, is it simply the fact that the larger surface area allows the eye to see at a sub-pixel level?

Secondly, on the pro monitors how good is focus assist (I'm in post so I've never used a pro setup before)?

Thanks.

I have an Ikan monitor that takes HDMI input that is 800 x 480 and works fine...looks great. I wouldn't call it a "cheap" monitor, I believe the kit is $900.

I say it helps a lot.
I can see focus with the small on camera screen.
If nothing else, you get a screen that can be angled more to your line of sight.
That alone makes it worth it.
Being larger, also helps.

AS long as it is at least 800x400, you should be fine.
Anything less, and the quality as well as the resolution would be a wash.

Answer: yes it is enough, decent, and better than the small screen

Depending on the size of the screen, 800x480 might not be "low-res" at all. For instance, on a touchscreen smartphone, that would be considered very high resolution. In fact, resolutions higher than 800x480 are extremely rare on monitors 7" and smaller.

I'm surprisingly happy with the liitle "Lilliput" It does help with focus quite a bit & color looks the same as my LCD. Very light also

i drag an extension cord with me and keep a 23" widescreen 1080P LCD with HDMI input in the van. not practical ALL the time, but for most shoots, it blows away any small LCD monitor.

though i wouldnt mind picking up a 7" or so LCD for mobile shots, i cant justify $1000 for one.
