I am having problems playing clips from my 7d 1080p 24fps on FCP 7 on a2gb Imac. The video freezes after 5 seconds. When I dump the clip to my desktop it plays fine in FCP? The external is a lacie 2tb usb

FW400 is not a fast enough data stream to handle 1080p in FCP. You need a FW800 connection.

OK The Imac I have has no fire wire 800 in the back, is there a work around or connector/adaptor thing ah ma bobber. Or do I need a new CPU

Post your computer specs, Imacs since 2007 and maybe before that had firewire 800, I would be really surprised if your computer did not have it.

Sorry to tell you that that is an 2006 model that "Yes" does not have firewire 800 and appears to have two firewire 400 ports. I would suggest you get the fastest firewire 400 external drive you can afford and convert all of your files to Pro Res, and not Pro Res HQ. Also upgrade your ram to 4gbs as it will help a lot.

This will allow you to work, but start saving up for a new computer because your going to need one soon.
