GH2 Are all these new hacks and patches creating a placebo effect?

What you and Kholi say makes sense. I think the 180 degree shutter with film cams is right on, and may be because it's mechanical. Where there's an actual shutter. With the gh2, it could very well be the software that's not right on the money, where 1/40th digitally is actually closer to 1/48th mechanicaly. I may be way off in my thinking, but after just messing around, I like it better myself. And I like the added light gain as well.

Was just going to post, you get the extra light which isn't a bad thing. I also encourage people to experiment with the 1/25 and 1/30 shutter. For static shots without a lot of motion, 1/25 isn't the most terrible though, 1/30 could be usable as well, if done sparsely.

I'm definitely going to give that a try and compare them to see what I prefer.

As per cloud I too find my current hack a little excessive. I wonder, are there any hacks that are under 100Mbps with a gop of 1 or is that unstable?

At the end if the day, I was happy with the drastic change I saw between the sstock codec and the 65 Mbps patch I tried but that had a gop of 3. It might be me being convinced by my readings that a gop of 1 gives you the best over all filmic feel, but I dont know if I can notice a difference between 1 and 3 gop.

At the end of the day, I just want a smooth and reliable 1080 at 24 and 720 at 60p that will look great and be color grade friendly that has a low gop of 1 or 3 that gives me more than one gig per minute.

Or maybe I should keep the quantum v2 that I have now and try shooting more on the lower bitrate setting?

Aquamotion V2 is GOP 1 I believe, and it's right around 100mbps.

this is weird. i remember doing some tests and the 1/40 looked pretty much the same as 1/50.
maybe i misjudged it.

Ah, right, Aquamotion should give you that. I dunno what kinda space you're looking at though .Does it span?

I have a Sandisk Extreme 30mb/s 32gb card.

Spanned fine at 1080p 24p. The 1080 30p (80%) mode crapped out once it hit the span limit. It randomly crapped out one time, when I was shooting 720 60p w/ autofocus on, at 3200 iso, on the 14-42mm lens.

regular 1080 24p has been flawless, though.

Video Bitrate 24H=154000000
Video Bitrate 24L=64000000
Video Bitrate FSH/SH=96000000
Video Bitrate FH/H=48000000
Auto Quantizer for 1080 modes=4 - All to details
Auto Quantizer for 720 modes=3 - Most to details
720p50 GOP Size=1
720p60 GOP Size=3
1080i50 and 1080p24 GOP Size=1
1080i60 GOP Size=1

There we go, i already have what i was looking for, and installed, just have to shoot at L setting when i want more space and i get the same quality as i did with the original KAE patch i installed at 65Mbps. :D

ok, found it:

40 shutter grab.jpg

50 shutter grab.jpg

well there IS a big difference indeed.
can someone has his own quick video test? (only if it's within reach)

Hmmm, that is a good test o do, but not exactly scientific as your hand may move back and forth at different rates each time. Even that tiny fraction of a second difference makes a different blur.

Honestly it's only preference or taste. Don't bend over backward to figure irony but test and see how you like it in actual shooting scenarios. People, vehicles etc.

Try it with a fan, or some object that spins at a reasonably slow, constant rate?

Let me break out my Panasonic FX-A 3000-AA5 fan which has interval RPM rates from 2 to 7500 at increments of 2. That way I can set it to a scientifically calibrated constant rate of 60 for jubilance inducing 1/40th to 1/50th shutter speed comparison to satiate the wisest among us!

Hehe.

I might try testing with a metronome in the future. Maybe with ETC it could get some fast and yet reliable motion.

I guess ill just wait for the 1.1 hack before i hack my gh2@papa: is that intra at 64mbps? Is it stable?

I gotta say, all this talk about intra, P frames, B frames, I frames. I get cmpletely lost. I don't know what the 64MBps is at.

Does intra vs other have to do with the GOP?? Is 1 GOP meaning that they are all individual frames making them intra? IF you have 3 GOP does that mean it's not intra? hrm..

+1 I'd love to see a patch that would span on my 16GB Sandisk 30MB cards, had intra, and GOP1, and give me a decent run time.

A lot of my work this year is going to be weddings and corporate documentaries. I can handle using a 100MB+ patch for commercial shoots, but I need something for those 15-30minute interviews, and hour plus wedding ceremonies.

Kholi, still waiting on that workflow post! Really enjoying your blog posts thus far.

If you are shooting static interview shots and weddings, what do you need GOP = 1 for?
