I want to get an adapter for my gh2 for canon lenses but see different ones. Whats the best name brand adapter out there? There is a saying buy cheap, buy twice, so I rather get the good one first
There are a few kinds of EOS to M4/3 adapters:
- Built-in aperture blades. I have a cheapo $40-50 one from Ebay, Kiron makes the pricy ones. I bought cheap just to play around with it. Physics gets in the way of the concept of adding aperture blades that far behind the front element of the lens, so the picture vignettes after about one stop of light reduction.
- No aperture blades. I prefer these since they're cheaper and I don't use the built-in aperture much anyways. Fotodiox has cheap adapters that are pretty well-made, but you can of course spend $100-200 to get absolute precision-cut pieces. I can't recall brands off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone else will.
- Electronically-controlled aperture adapter, specifically the RedRock LiveLens adapter. These are the best and most functional, but you pay for it. $600.
EOS lens trick: It's time-consuming, but when I shoot with EOS lenses and can't rent the RedRock adapter, I keep a T2i/Canon body in the camera kit. Switch it to manual exposure, set the camera to the F-stop you want. Press and hold the depth-of-field preview button (beneath the lens release button). You'll hear the lens aperture click. Press the lens release button and take off the lens and voila, your lens is set to whatever stop you selected with the camera vs having it wide-open.
If you're talking about FD/manual focus primes, it's a lot simpler and yes the fotodiox will do a great job. It's cheap and you'll know if you need to spend the money for a pricier adapter before too long. It never hurts to have one as a backup.
