archiving 16gig question

hey all,

long time reader, first time poster.

I just got my 16 gig and was wondering how you would suggest backing up the p2 files. I have them on my lacie 500gig, but was wondering if I could split up the files to burn on dvds... any recommendations?

Thanks!

You could; no individual file is larger than 4GB. Might be a bit of a chore to do it manually though; would something like HD Log do this automatically for you? Or, heck, just about any backup program should allow spanning across media, right?

id be careful of lacie drives. ive had 2 of them corrupt a ton of client files. and have heard many other nightmares. go over to lafcpug.org and search their forum - TONS of stories

import them into FCP or what ever your editing pgm is, and do what barry says, just import 4.7 or less.. It's going to be time consuming.. just buy an ext. HD for each project.. I use the MAC BOOKS by WD, they work great and are inexpensive.. To each his own...

nothing cheaper than Hard Drives to back up stuff right now. You could go BlueRay if you can afford it. but again. slow and expensive.

Right now I have my footage on editing drive, my p2 ingester laptop, and on my usb 2.0 external bus hd. Soon I will put all the footage on my external back up drive and clear them off my laptop and usb bus drive.
So basically i'm a back them up to external WD drive, plus I have teh files on my editing drive.

Get another hard drive for archiving your P2 files...for the usual disaster reasons on a current project...and especially if you ever plan to use those files again.

When you fill up the backup drive, just label and shelve it. Not nearly as tedius and time consuming as buring to DVD. USB2 is slower than FW 800, but much faster than DVD.

This morning's paper has Best Buy and Circuit City adds with good deals on good disk. What makes it less expensive is that it is USB2 instead of Firewire 800. But they are reliable brands. They are so cheap (relatively) that I bought a new hard disk just to archive my last project.

I also have a dedicated hard disk I plug in just for my indie project. You can daisychain the LaCie fw800.

I would not trust a single hard drive with archiving -- use RAID1 or better yet two separate drives in two different physical locations.

To guard against accidentally corrupting or deleting files on the archive drive, you can connect the drives to your computer using adapters that have write-protection:

Has anyone ever used a Drobo for archiving? http://www.drobo.com/

This is what I plan to use (just ordered one) to backup all my P2 media. It's a USB 2.0 device that holds up to 4 SATA I (or SATA II) drives in a RAID configuration. They are hot-swappable and DO NOT have to be the same size/brand/manufacturer. You can mix and match drives as your storage need increases.

The product demo lays it all out. They also have a storage calculator that shows what your capacity will be based on what size drives you slap in it.
