Hi,
i have idea to archive my GH2 files to DV tape (via Canon HV30). Is it meaningful?
What is best and fastest method to do that?
Thanks

You probably don't want your archive to consist of compressed footage. Why not just a hard drive or optical media?

If you want you can render and output to tape i do as well as BD and store on external drive ,its pointless unless you output to HDV though, despite what many say its very hard to see any difference in GH2 footage on HDV and the origional footage certainly not 720P and 50i.

DV tape is about the worst thing I could imagine to archive anything to.

The tape is ridiculously small and thin making any effects of humidity, dust or time even more dangerous.
The head on the player is also very small and this format is plagued with head clogs, problems with humidity and sometimes they are really finiky about how much tape you have on one side of the reel (for example if you are at the end of the tape and try to rewind, the deck thinks the tape is stuck and gives an error (pd170).

Look for DVD-R discs that are considered "archival quality". This will give you more data space than a DV tape and is designed to last a long time. Not to mention it won't take as long to access or write.

Oh well i have tapes of all formats going back over 30 years and have never had one fail yet , i have 105 edited mini dv and 106 hdv tapes none of the tapes have failed yet unlike many dvds i have made. Also two externals have lost info and failed.,My tapes are checked at different intervals.A 60 minute tape takes 60 mins not that i would ever bother with dvd sd rubbish but they take longer than 60 mins,i just hope blu rays which is my main archive are better than dvd crap but i have doubts.

imho, tape is the best archiving solution, proofed by time.

i could backup to usb disk, but this solution is good for backup, not for long time archive.
BD is not bad solution, but i'd like to know comparsion between BD and DV (why should be BD better than DV).
dvd is the worst, you cannot use it for archiving, in hd times.

Anaorganic DVDs are permanent, although not cheap. M-Discs are used by the Dept. of Defense, NASA for permanent archiving, These require an M-Disc DVD writer.

DataTresor Discs are similar to M-Discs, but cost 1/3rd the price and work in normal DVDRW drives:

CBS NEWS RE: Data Archiving. according to computer museums, tape is probably the best storage medium.

LTO tapes may be more reliable for data storage than DV tapes:

Hard drive is worst ever for storage! Lol. You get bluray. Or have big money get LTO. Hard drive is Lolsuck lol. Maybe hdv tape is ok.

not only would it not be a meaningful idea. im pretty sure it would be impossible, without a backward transcode step from your avchd / mjpeg to hdv...

Hard drive is worst ever for storage! Lol.
i completely disagree. ive been in the video / design biz for about 20 years. and ive archived to just about every media you can imagine. and the ONLY one that has never failed me is hard drives. ive seen enclosures fail, but never mechanisms. and in those cases, you just pop it into another enclosure or dock and off you go.

im not saying drives dont fail. just about everything CAN fail. AND DOES. but a LOT of drive horror stories ive heard involve either:
a. one of about three or four manufacturers (lacie, mypassport, maxtor)
b. poor user management.

again, YMMV. this is just my experience. and maybe i just have insanely good luck.

Well its not cheap, and depending on how much footage we are talking about but 10tb raid 5 will last me for years. This is the way that I am going to go, but this will not work if you shoot at higher bitrates.

In another 5 years, if history is any indication, 32TB drives should be available and they will be under $200 bucks. We are approaching storage escape velocity soon.

Has anyone looked at how much Amazon S3 storage costs. Maybe not the best solution, but an interesting option. Some times its best to keep stuff offsite.

7000 rpm? That's safe? Not. Never had drive last over 3 years. Its worst ever archive. Tape is best! Ask wall street! World finacial records stored on tape, not drive.

7000 rpm? That's safe?
whats 7000rpm? do you mean 7200 rpm? and by that reference are you saying that spinning media is the issue?

Never had drive last over 3 years
GOOD GOD MAN! where are you getting your drives? taco bell? or do you just live in a rain forest or something?

i just have to ask you. of these failed drives. what brands were they? and was it the DRIVE that failed or could it have been the enclosure that failed? did you look into that?

but 10tb raid 5 will last me for years
it is very easy to lost all your data in raid array. I remember several accidends with HP/Dell servers.
And broken water pipelines in wall are also bad :)

about Amazon S3: you should expect 150USD/1TB/month. Btw.. how fast is your upload? ;) But in future, it will be very usefull and interesting service.

about Wall Street: or Google, they had accident 1 week ago, and they must to recover from tapes

You think something spinning 7000 rpm will be something last long time? 7000 fast! My wife mouth not even go that fast! My tape spin at 0rpm! And I have tape my dad give me from year 1985! Still play nice. You got hard drive from 1985? How about 1995? All gone! Its recycled and in your hyundai now. I have evry brand drive fail! Even many laptop drive witch supposed to be better.

You got hard drive from 1985?
did hard drives even exist in 1985?

How about 1995
YES. in fact every hard drive ive had in production from 1995 to last week, all still functional

man, you are either really rough on your drives, have really dirty power or maybe you kicked daniel bernoulli's dog in a previous life...

; ) - i joke.
