Apple Prores/Mpegstreamclip/ FCP/PC question

Ok...just started to use my 7d 3 days ago and so far so good...(well one thing but thats another story). I wasnt going to do any paid jobs untill i got a rig for it, but i got a call to film footage of a manufacturing plant. nothing big...so i decided that i'm gonna break this bad boy in on this job (i'll take my dvx just in case :) )

my Question though is...i;m delivering this footage to the client who uses FCP but has never dealt with this kind of footage. I have no prob sitting with them through the transcode procedure using mpegstreamclip so they can learn it.

1. Does Apple pro res come with FCP or do you have to downlaod it ?(i know nothing of FCP)

2. I've seen in Phil Bloom's mpegstreamclip tutorial for FCP users, where he used AppleXD cam 30p for 5d footage to control file sizes. There is an Apple XDCAM option (from seeing the clip in the tutorial)for 24p but i dont see 23.976 option...can that used for 24p footage shot on 7D?

3. finally..just in case i'm the one that will have to convert this on my PC (i'm using DNXHD in mpegstreamclip for my stuff)...is there a way for me to convert it to prores on my PC? As of now that codec is not in my mpegstreamclip...can i download it amd will that work?

thanks for the reply Coddida.

do you know if AppleXDCAM 1080 24p can be used for the 7d 23.976 files? just out of curiosity.

XDCam EX is 1920x1080, regular XDCam is 1440x1080. XDCam 35Mb variable bit rate is long GOP MPEG. I would not recommend encoding your 7D footage to XDCam.

There is no Apple XDCam, its a Sony format that FCP can edit natively. ProRes DOES work on a PC, you'll have to go the the Apple site and download it. I'm not sure where it is, nor have I ever used it with MPEG StreamClip on the PC.

If the the person your delivering the footage to has FCP 7x then I would also suggest using the EOS Log and Transfer utility. However, you need to deliver the footage with the same exact file structure that's on your CF card for it to work.

another question. As i understand it, external harddrives are compatible with either Mac or PC...if i dump my footage unto my external HD (pc compatible) in the field...how will i get those files unto his Mac? I only have one 16gb card right now so i'd have to dump...back up and clear the card.
I'd really like to break in the 7d on this simple job to see how it will stand up all day. I know i'm not ready (equipment wise with cards and hoodloupe and blah blah, just my cam, tripod and card.) as yet to be doing any kind of heavy stuff but this is pretty simple. If not, there's always my dvx.

Macs can read/write to Windows FAT32 HDs. Windows cannot read/write to Mac OS HDs so you should be good to go using your external HD.

But Chuck is absolutely right! You need to make sure you keep your entire contents in the same format. Copy ALL content from your card and paste into a folder called "card 1" on your HD. Backup content to another HD (internal?). Confirm that content appears to be the same in all three locations -- eg. # of files, file sizes, total folder size, etc. -- then format your card and start over, copying entire contents into folder called "card 2", etc.

It will be really difficult to recover your footage if you don't copy it all over.

I'd highly recommend getting at least one more memory card. Otherwise, you're going to have to wait to transfer all your footage, back it up, etc.

yeh i plan to get like 4 16 gb cards in all eventually. but since this job isnt hardcore and i'm also doing it for a friends company i'm going to jus the card i have now. I def would not do this on a bigger job and dont plan to seriously use the 7d for paid gigs till its up to par (monitor, shoulder rig and extra cards at least).

thanks again for the help peeps!
