Apple iPhone4 and iOS4.0 - Thread

It's like we're soul mates on this, Barry - cell mates? Uh .... nevermind.

The EVO does everything I ever wanted a cell phone to do, which is why I got it. IN SPITE of the fact that the video camera is oh so very weak. I went against my own criteria (must have iphone 4 video quality!) because the phone shines in every other aspect without any complaints. So I took a leap of faith that the video camera on the phone will be vastly improved.

I still have 7 days to return the phone with Sprints 30 day money back guarantee. Don't think I'll be returning it.

Well, plus it's 4G and I do live in a 4G city. But I don't like buying something for what it may someday be, I rather like getting something that does exactly what I want it to, the day I buy it. So I do look forward to seeing how the video camera app develops... because that is a major disappointment on the Evo so far...

Well, having never owned an iPhone I cannot compare the two. Judging from the online reviews they are pretty much in a dead heat. If you like one, there is no great reason to not like the other. Each of these phones have a spec sheet long enough to where everyone can have their own set of reasons for choosing one over the other.

I think from a feature standpoint, the Evo nudges out the iPhone just a bit because of the screen size, network, kickstand, hotspot, Google voice and the no need to jailbreak it. Though admittedly, I'm sure the screen on the iPhone is pretty, 4G is only limited anyway and it has Apples long running success with touch-screen technology. Though the Evo's touch is pretty snappy.

So, its a close race to be sure.

Linux is open-source as well and we see how great the desktop environments are on that platform :) I use Linux every day at work, I would be considered a power user for sure, and can tell you one thing, I have YET to see a desktop environment that compares to OSX or WINDOWS on the Linux side. I've used them all practically, and they ALL have issues.

I am tired of software project forks and ten versions of the same application where each one is so hobbled because of open source bickering. Not to say there isn't really nice apps on Linux, but they are FAR and FEW between. Ardour is NOTHING compared to the likes of Logic Pro, Digital Performer or ProTools. GIMP is nothing compared to Photoshop in my opinion.

I find the android platform to be suffering in the same sense. Granted, I agree with the fact I don't like the heavy hand of apple deciding every app that can be on the phone, I also don't like the absolute lack of regulation either. Apple has always been about one thing, repeatable experience with their products. That's why they limit UI options and why they've written so many white papers on UI design.

If you want to be a power user on your phone, and spend a lot of time trying to get that great perfect phone, you are not going to be happy with an Iphone, just as PC people cannot stand a Mac since they don't have to build anything, or fight with drivers :) Or in the Linux world, build world (or the kernel) everytime you want to add something to the system.

Both systems have definite pluses and minus, and I absolutely agree that they are in a dead heat at the moment (although I wouldn't give the EVO an advantage having used one, I still think the pros and cons make them both very attractive).

Pertaining to the cameras on the back, where are you getting your information about them being the same? I'm not seeing that anywhere. Are the pixels the same size?

I have looked at images off of both, and I can tell you, without question, the resolving quality of the iPhone is MUCH higher. Maybe the OLPF is a bit too strong in the EVO. I know that the pixel count is higher, but even with identical crops (making the framing the same) I can detect MUCH higher spacial frequencies on the iphone4. This is EASILY measurable by looking at text and seeing where it cannot be read anymore.

I think 6 months from now is going to be really interesting! :) Or we'll all be too busy with our new cameras! :)

That's the problem. In six months, the iPhone4 and the Evo will be old news. You ever do Google research on a potential phone purchase and happen to stumble upon an article based on a phone from just 1-2 years ago? They always seem so ancient. So, no matter HOW awesome these 2 phones seem to be, in 1 years time they are going to suck.

I mean six months in terms of where Apple is with pressure from Google through product features, and if in fact iPhone makes it to Verizon in January. Having used computers as long as I have, there is NO argument from me on how fast technology becomes obsolete these days (at least in the digital world, analog not as much)

The first 2Ghz phones are rumored to start being released come winter this year. I'll probably upgrade to the next EVO incarnation when its released.

Exciting times.

Yep, it's all about the way the speed is used. I've come to appreciate that over the years... back in the day I was obsessed with clock speed, but I've realized there is a lot more to gain actual "speed"

Heh, well given I design chips for a living, I can tell you it's the absolute truth. You can make something VERY easily that runs 10x as fast clock wise, but slower overall. It's that balance between pipelining your operations and complexity of timing closure.

In other words, it's hard to really know. Benchmarking an application you actually use and care about is the BEST way to test speed.

It's been a few years since I built my desktop but in playing around with the various configurations I noticed that nothing effected the overall performance more than the quality of my hard drive. At the time, I was running two Western Digital Raptors in a RAID 0 configuration each with a 10,000 RPM. Smooth playback, no lag time. Now THAT'S where you spend your money! Oh wait, this is a phone thread...either way...same rules apply...

Interestingly enough, it looks like people have figured out how to mount a hard drive on the iPad with the USB kit, wonder how long till they do that with the iPhone.

Also, I am on the coreaudio dev list and know that the iPad support class compliant audio interfaces through the USB port out of the box (intended by apple) although nothing really uses that ability yet.

And a PS for you EVO users or want to users, wrapping your hand around certain parts of the EVO attenuates the signal as well. We were doing it the other day comparing the iPhone and the EVO with signal strength.

i havent had issues, just normal shi*ty at&t service lol.

you can say that again! :) I am so conflicted because my wireless service from AT&T is crappy, more bars than anywhere? Whatever, but I have Uverse with AT&T and my internet is AWESOME from them. Beats the HELL out of the other local provider (Time Warner Cable).

:)

Just shows, big companies are NOT consistent.
